My son enlisted and wanted to try out for special ops. He couldn't pass the swimming test but was told he could try out until he was 23 years of age or something like that. They talked him into going in right away to be a MM on sub. Now at boot camp they tell him he is not eligible to pursue spops because he is assigned to a sub. He is very unmotivated now. He is in his third week at boot camp and goes to A school straight after graduating. What are his options? THank you.

NavyMOM -I am not sure where you are getting your information from but if your son is still in Boot Camp he still has all the options he ever had A school is a general school. If he goes to Sub-School from A school then he will loose all of his options to go to Special OPS because the Navy won't spend all that special training on Sub-school then let him pursue whatever career he wants.I would say it would be better for him to go out in general Navy then go to MM A school go out in the Fleet then keep trying for Special OPS from the Fleet.I am an Oldtimer so I am not much help but I put a lot of time in and I know how the Navy works in general.NavyMom I will add if he can go to MM A school then qualifies to go to a Sub-School and then go aboard a Sub he is in the US Navy Eliete so just tell him either way he will come out a winner.BY the way if he fails Sub school then they will send him back to the Fleet anyway then he will be able to try for Special OPS.normal special OPS comes from the Fleet the only hold up in trying is age limit or not being to pass the qualifications.

i know i had an interest in joining special ops. its tough, but what i decided o do first was to go in as a corpman first. reason being is that my recruiter told me that special ops people always need a corpman to go with then on missions. so it gives me a better chance of being able to become a corpman. maybe he can become a corpsman as well and work towards spec ops.
