After Seaman recruits go to boot camp do they automatically become Boatwains mate and not do what their contract tells they will do like having a ABE job for example and end up cleaning toilets and stuff???

Boot camp is the basic civilian-to-sailor transition course before you're sent off to what you enlisted for. If you're contracted to go to a certain school, most of the time you'll head straight to that A-school after graduating boot camp.

Once enrolled, the command has their own idea of what you do until you class up. Most of it will involve cleaning or watchstanding until your class day arrives. If it involves a security clearance that hasn't gone through yet, you may end up in this holding pattern for quite a while. But for the most part, the low-man-on-the-totem-pole practice is employed. Toilet washing duties are generally replaced by the next newest guy, unless you really screw up.

Top_Gun- I am not sure how long A school is for ABE but you have waiting times between rates in other words when you take the exam for E-3 you don't just go take the exam for E-4 the next day you have to qualify and be recommended for the next Rate and that goes all the way up until CPO or E-7 and then you go before the Review Board.

Depends upon timing...and your recruitment contract...

Sheet happens...I attended Basic, A school...sub school..and A package course and 7L16 Generator school before being deployed to my boat...

Many did not...

strobelvets-I am an oltimer you most likely know more about current in and outs than I do but I remember when I was going to change over to Sub-service.I did everything I had to to do to go to New London then I went out on an old Deisel Boat the USS Greyback and made one dive and cameback and turned down my Sub School. But I do know you don't just go to Boot and then go to A school and go onoard a Bird Farm and walk up on the flight deck and say I am a ABE.If you don't think I am not old try (1956-1972)

i dont think this applies to just BM's. until your E4 and sometimes higher than that your gonna have to put in your other duties work like everybody else. and face it, BM and GM are jobs that dont require much attention if you get my drift. blowing a whistle ever so often is not what i call in demand. lol, no offense, but your job has alot of downtime and your services are need elsewhere
