Yeah, but it's usually only those Presidents that didn't mothball the fleet.

Guys I will attempt to support Oboma as President he is the people's choice. I just hope he turns out better than the 110th Congress and there is one thing for sure he can't just vote present now.

Makes me wonder why a submarine would be named after the American President, contrary to the whole "aircraft carrier" thing. I suppose the irony to that would be to make it patrol off the coast of Panama. Of course, I'm willing to bet that a lot of submarine officers weren't thrilled to serve aboard the USS Hyman G Rickover, considering the hell and torture that that namesake delivers to all of us. una per praesidium |

You have a point there. I guess a lot of people honored Bull Halsey's service but most Sailors my age and the ones I learned from disliked him very much.

I did hear a story from a JO on board the USS Thomas Gates (CG-51) that it was the only cruiser named after someone (since CGs are named after battles). The reason behind that was it was believed that Admiral Arleigh Burke absolutely hated Thomas Gates, and he and his whole family refused to have a Burke DDG named after him.
I can't find any proof to that as of yet, but I think the story is interesting. una per praesidium |

Jimmy Carter got a Submarine named after him and he tried very hard to mothball the Fleet. George Bush the first tore the Navy apart and got a Carrier named after him. I don't think we will have a Country left, never mind a Military after Obama gets through with us. So, we really don't have to worry about a Ship being named after him.

I guess my knowledge of what Bush1 did to the Navy is limited as far as Jimmy Carter I think his association in early Nuclear Sub Force was his reason not his accomplishment as a President I leave that up to the Bubbleheads as far as ships names when I hear a ships name I have to know the designate before I know what they are talking all names have changed since my time.

I'm at least glad to see that their method of naming Destroyers and other ships are quite respectable.
I have heard some complaints about the USS NEW YORK, though. Many actually want it to be named the New York City, in keeping it with the "battlefield" genre, since New York and NY have this silly city/state mix in it. This complaint actually coming from an upstate New Yorker. But considering that the remaining L.A. class subs are American cities, and these battlefields took place over American cities, it'll just add another monkey wrench into the consistency of naming our vessels. una per praesidium |

I don't know much about the Navy. When I had the choice in ROTC I thought that I like ships and boats but only on a nice one with all the creature comforts and a marina in the evening. So I choose Army. No hard feelings: Let's give Obama a chance. So far he hasn't made any stupid decisions. He is the new CIC and we have to bow to that. I will not be surprised if he reduces the military. He may not have an alternative. But that isn't his fault, that was caused by Lehman, Goldman, Sachs and the snowballers in the banking system and we all went along and were duped.

FYI...Aircraft carrier were originally named after battles but not rigidly, the way traditionally battleships (B and BB) were named after states and cruisers (CA and CL) were named after American cities and submarines after fish.
Our first carrier was the USS Langley. Lexington and Saratoga, our second and third carriers, were converted from battlecruisers in the 1920s -- the battle cruisers were all to have had names from American battles, but when we finally did build battlecruisers (CB) during WWII, they were named for territories (USS Alaska and Guam) The next group of carriers in the 1930s were named for Revolutionary War American ships: e.g. Hornet, Wasp, Enterprise. Battle names came in during WWII, e.g. Midway and Coral Sea as did the names of important politicians, as in the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. After WWII, the first of our new carriers was the USS Forrestal, named for the first Secretary of Defense. Newer carrier names seem mostly to have been named after presidents, except where an older name was used (Enterprise) or another name was selected (America). |

Sully...you're right on with the dates...I was active from 1957 thru 1971...then served a few years in the reserves near home at Brunswick NAS screwing around with P3 Orions (unfortunately not flying them).
After flight school served on the USS ranger with VA 95 flying Skyraiders...then when the squadron transitioned to Skyhawks I went to school for a while and then trained in Crusaders...a dream to fly, a nightmare to land. But overall a great plane |

Burner... I remember my first interduction to the CVA 61 was we had watched all of the smaller ships being moved all day long then all of a sudden this big bow came around the corner and they moored the USS Ranger in front of our Div office.I don't know if you ever been to Sasebo but Item Basin was the drydock where the Japenese built the Super Carrier that was sunk during sea trials up the coast from Sasebo I think in 1944.It was built on the hull of the 3rd Japanese Super Battleship.
