Hello, I'm very interesting in joining the Navy, but like alot of people I'm torn on what jobs to choose. I love electronics and so have narrowed it down to Electrician's Mate rating or Aviation Electrician.
Could anyone who's had actual experience in these two fields comment on how they like it? Which is more challenging? Which would give me more job opportunites if I decide not to re-enlist? Thanks alot in advance, Justin |

Hmmmm, reckon its a matter of ones perspective. Electricians Mate can be assigned to a multitude of jobs and locations within the Navy, and Aviation Electrician will only be assigned to work on aviation related equipment. Either way, yer gonna be on a boat. Just depends on what kind of boat you wanna spend yer days and nites on.
As for job opportunities? all that depends on what you put into it in obtaining as many certifications that are recognized out in the civilian world. Doesn't do to much good to hold a bunch of certificates and such that don't corelate to something an employer can recognize.... JustinC- Gunny is right although they have AE's on Naval Air Stations but they are usualy are attached to a Squadron. An Aircaft Carrier has both EMs & AEs EMs are general Elect.but are usualy placed according to schools he or she has went to meaning Class B schools.AEs strickley Air Craft Maintance they might have the ability to assist general EMs but I don't think they have time to do someone else's job both of them in the begineing need the same qualifactions as far as I know.I was a Engineman until I went to class B Gas Turbine school that put me in a new class even though I went back to what I liked best Diesles & Hyd.

Heh, asking someone to tell you how they like their job and basing your decision on that isn't really a good idea. People fall into 2 categories when it comes to how they like their jobs. Either they love it, or hate it. One person may hate being an AE and wished they had been an AT, or an ET. Someone else might love being an AE and wouldn't change rates, even for a 60 grand bonus. Best to just research what each rate you're interested in does and where they go, and what their equivalent would be in the civilian sector. Probably not what you want to hear, but research is the best way to findout about what job will best suit YOU.

Sammy- I am not sure how long you were in the USN but I have an Idea if you are in College not long enought. How many duty stations maybe 2 .I have more time underway on the mid-watch than you have in the Navy I have watched you telling people how salty you are.

JustinC-I went into the USN thinking BMs were the greatest thing since apple pie because my Brother was a BM but later what I found out was in 1956 the rate was so closed that there was very few E-5 BMs without 2 hashmarks around go find out for yourself ask people check and find what kind of schools are availabe and find out what kind of training those schools teach you .I was an EN for 17 yrs and never got tired of it until the Z- Grams ask me to except things that was totaly against.

Where have I talked about how salty I am? All I did was tell him to research which would best fit him. I was in the Army before I was in the Navy, so I may not have as much "underway" time as you, but I do have a little experience under my belt. I hated being in the Army, the job people told me would be awesome, turned out, to not be so awesome to me. Had I done a little research before "jumping" in over my head, I would have gone a different route, and may have stayed in the Army instead of going into the Navy. Oh yeah, of course, you got more time on the shitter than I got time underway. Don't be full of yourself, and don't be bitter towards me because you couldn't get that rocker before retirement.

Forgot to add:
I whole-heartedly apologize to the MilitarySpot.com community for not meeting Sully's "Pre-posting underway and time in Requirements". I must have missed that in the Forum rules, I will re-read the rules ASAP. |

Is that supposed to win my respect for a washout salt who couldn't "make it"? So your only defense to not making chief was because of some smartass second class? This second class must have held alot of power, last I heard second classes didn't write evals for firsts, unless of course you were just some POS and they made a second class LPO instead of you?
Or are you threatening me? Are you trying to wave your penis around like you're some kind of billy bad ass? You aren't the first, first class I've pissed off, and I know you won't be the last. I know your kind, all puffed up, but only with hot air. |
