Ok... Well heres my story. I've been to meps 1 time already. I was not medically cleared because of high blood pressure. I am in the process and will obtain a waiver for it this week... Heres my question... I scored relatively high on my asvab, and my line scores put me in position to take basically any tech job I'm interested in... On to the problem.
Has anyone who visits here actually been on a sub? I've heard many horror stories about the limited space, recycled air, limited water supply, etc. I'm not much of a person to be upset over isolation, and although I don't like the idea of being cramped it's not much of an issue... My main concern is something coming up because of the sub that will make my time extremely un-enjoyable. I ask because my recruiter told me that they where very interested in getting me either on a sub or into aviation. I don't want to sign up for something I'll regret for 4 years, but for a possible sign-on bonus, and increased wages I am definitely considering accepting that I may be on a sub. Once again any help is appreciated. |

This topic is way old, but way overdue. I think I'll bring it up again in case the question is still out there.
Limited space... yes, unless you end up on a Ohio class. Then there's lots of space. I'm on an L.A. class now, but rode a 688I and a boomer. Recycled air: is cleaner and more filtered and purified than your typical city air. During ventilation, we snorkel in fresh air to remove the buildup of CO2 and other non-breathables. Limited water: No, unless your 10K or your reverse osmosis machine is broken, nuclear powered subs are self-sustainable when it comes to air and water. Food, on the other hand, is the only limiting factor. The water there is the cleanest and most expensive water you'll ever drink. At least for 10K boats, nuclear powered steam goes in to desalinizing your water. Brita couldn't do it any better. What you do on a sub can be as equally unenjoyable (or worse) than work on a surface ship. It's the Navy; don't expect paradise at all hours of the day. Submarines once, submarines twice... una per praesidium |
