Sorry, y'all got a Marine on the Navy posts...
I'm putting together a historical project (Joint USN/USMC, Intel Sailors and Marines KIA), trying to track down WWII era USN Rates for intelligence and having very little luck. Everyone keeps telling me they didn't have rates for intel back then....so don't know if that's the only answer I'm going to get. So, next step is trying to identify these guys by word of mouth. Any good sites/organizations I could contact? Forget ONI and NIP, they were no help. Thanks. |

If it helps any, Radiomen (RN, I believe) were basically the intel guys back then, if there weren't officers handling the job. As you could guess, they handled communications and such, and were merged into the Information Service Technician (IT) rate around the mid '80s (I believe).

Yes, there is. It's got a bunch of 'sub-rates' to it, like CTI (Cryptological Technician, Interpritive), CTN (CT, Networking), CTO (CT, Operations [merging with IT]), etc.
I don't think it was around before the mid-90's, tho. Again, not sure of the specifics... I know it wasn't around during WWII, tho. |

Hey! I found a list of USN Rates for WWII in the national archives. Yay for me! If anyone is interested, I can email them. Have only a hard copy, will have to scan them in.
