Dave I am not sure but I think the true name for that flat hat was Winter Overseas Cap and yes it was warmer it was made out of wool same as the Uniform.

Dave I found a web site.Blujacket.com it states the Flat Hat had been part of USN seabag for over 100 yrs.but the material was to expensive to make so they dis-continued in April 1963.

They are trying to make them all look uniform now PO2. They want the non-pregnant females to match the pregnant females, especially before a westpac.

ah, i get it. i can see how they want to look uniform, but i personally like the ones we are currently assigned to. but thats just me.

The Navy should incorporate baseball type uniform. Then it would be like being on a team.
