San Diego, Calif. (Dec. 8, 2004) - The Navy introduced a set of concept service uniforms for Sailors E-6 and below in response to the fleet's feedback on current uniforms. The service blue uniform will be worn year-round and will take the place of the summer white and winter blue uniforms. Dress uniforms, such as "Cracker Jacks" will not be affected by this wear test. Each uniform offers options for Sailors to choose from and give feedback to Task Force Uniform. Feedback from the fleet will be used to determine the final year-round service uniform. |

Yeah, I read about this earlier. It looks like alot of Marines don't really like the idea. They are saying it's too much like their Carlies. I think if they are going to change, they need to get something more "unique" to them. What do you guys think about it?
Here is another link about it. A witty saying proves nothing - Voltaire |

Actually, I really liked the uniforms I was first issued in 75. It broke my heart when they changed back to the crackerjacks in 84.
Being an Airdale, the Khaki one would be closest to tradition, though. It does look too much like a Marines uniform !! "We raise our glasses against the forces of evil" |

New uniforms??
"Hello - I'm Rudi, the Service Manager... Your Volvo should be ready in 2 hours....." Looking at the kilt, but can't tell if it's pleated in back. How come there's no sporran??? And the plaid is too damn 'fine' to make out in the photograph... |

Those greens were sharp. Maybe the regs say they are permitted for wear generally but perhaps their wear is also prescribed on the command level.
As for straight-leg uniforms.....sure makes it hard to roll a turd out the pantleg on an overnite drunken Liberty! Course, who goes on liberty in Uniform anymore? |

I loved the Cracker Jack's! So did most of the girls. I always thought the whites looked best as they were a little more salty looking.
However my absolute favorite uniform is the dungarees. I have more pictures of me in the Navy wearing my dungarees. Time changes everything even the Navy (for a while). |

Guys the reason the Greens looked like Marine Uniforms that is because they were. Athorized in WW 1 I saw a movie about early Aircraft Carriers and they had those Uniforms my next door neighbor was a retired Aviation CPO and he explained the use of the uniform. The Cracker Jack Flat hat was part of Seabag in 1956 but very few Units would let you wear them they were usualy worn in areas where they was no SP they were finaly removed from reg. issue in 1963.

The blue ones look like a generic AF uniform.

quote: When DesRon 28 went to New York City 42nd Street piers in 1960, and again in 1961, we wore our flat hats. I liked that and so did most of the crew. We looked sharp in our dress blues with the flat hat. In my entire period of Navy service, both active and reserve (1958 to 68) the only time my flat hat was worn was in New York City. |

Dave I saw a convoy of Gators wear the old Cracker Jack Flat Hat in Pusan Korea in I think 1958 and it was cold enought to wear a Peacoat.I think the Senior Officer in that convoy decided what to wear or maybe the Senior Officer in Port made the desision I don't know.

When you saw a convoy of Gators wear the old Cracker Jack Flat Hat in Pusan Korea and it was cold enough to wear a Peacoat, it was a wise move on the part of the officer in charge. I did not know it then, but the flat hat actually would keep our heads warmer, thus the body retained more warmth.
