quote: Sorry if you misunderstood, but I do drive on a daily basis. I'm a Cable Service Technician and driving is part of the job. I don't know where you got the idea that I don't drive, but...I drive every day of the week, and after 31 years of driving still do not have a traffic accident on my record. Real courage is found, not in the willingness to risk death, but in the willingness to stand, alone if necessary, against the ignorant and disapproving herd. — Jon Roland, 1976 |

so then holt i gather you would be only in favor of it being legalized as a controlled substance, like benzodiazepenes and painkillers?

I wouldn't want to go on a combat mission with a person high on anything.
In some states it is not illegal to drive while high on pot, Idaho being an example. As in most controversial subjects the facts and research can be cherry picked to support whatever POV you might assume. This post is pretty critical of the effects of pot but even they admit that the effects upon driving are pretty minimal: http://www.drugabuse.gov/NIDA_Notes/NNVol11N1/Marijuana.html This one from norml (as you would expect) concludes that it's really no big deal: http://www.norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=5450&wtm_format=print As for me, if I had to choose between riding with a drunk or a pothead, I would take the pothead everytime. The cost of processing and incarcerating pot users is pretty expensive and if it remains illegal, it can't be taxed or regulated. Alaska says "smoke 'em if ya got 'em". Pretty much legal there and in Detroit and Ann Arbor, MI possesion of a small amount is basically a traffic ticket. Here are some facts regarding drug deaths in the USA. For this study pot is considered a drug. http://www.angelfire.com/rnb/y/charts3.htm tobacco 340,000 to 450,000 alcohol 150,000+ aspirin 180 to 1000+ caffiene 1000 to 10,000 legal drugs 14,000 to 27,000 illegal drugs 3,800 to 5,200 marijuana 0 Doesn't seem to be very dangerous according to the facts. I am not in favor of anyone driving under the influence of any controlled substance..but I am also not in favor of people who drive while talking on their cell phones, putting on makeup, or even reading for crying out loud! and let's not even go there with some older drivers! but i digress..
I am a member of NORML myself. that should pretty much tell you where I stand on the matter. |

I sincerely think that whatever you do in your house, is your business. If you make a LEGAL living, are in your home with no minors, are not driving, and not bothering the public; aka loud music/rowdiness, you should be able to do what you want.
However, these simple rules of common courtesy seem to be the hardest for most to follow. We'd not have rooms stacked floor to celing with useless lawbooks, filled with useless laws if people just used commonsense, and respected thy neighbor. i.e. I can't beleive they had to actually pass a law in CA saying it is illegal to bone the dead. Should that not be commonsense? So, that is my two cents. ----------------------------------------------- Everyday I wake up breathing, is a good day. |

quote: Ummm...they had to pass a law against it so that they could, y'know, CHARGE people with the crime. No law, no law-breaking: "Mr. Johnson, you've been accused of porking a corpse - how do you plead?" "Not guilty on account of THERE AIN'T NO LAW AGAINST IT!" See? Now, if you're point was "Why do we even need a law - it's just wrong", well, I agree - but there are some sick puppies out there. quote: Not really funny, Amy...Considering that the name is for MAJ Richard I. Bong, USAAF. Medal of Honor Recipient and United States all-time Ace-of-Aces. 40 air-to-air kills in the Pacific Theater of Operations, killed in an aircraft accident in 1945... Not pontificating, just happens to be so... "We're fighting for this woman's honor...Which is more than she's ever done.." |

Come on, man. It is funny for a sign. That's not being disrespectful to Major Bong. In the context of this thread it's funny. OH MY GOD!!!! I just defended one of amvet's post. I must shower now. I feel unclean. |

Legalize it. I don't smoke anymore and if made legal I probably still would not, but criminalizing it is not the answer. Prohibition of anything doesn't work if there's a significant number of people that want it. It just waste prison space, creates more street crime due to the black-market, and creates a potentially dangerous product(weed could be laced with anything).
If it's to remain illegal, then so should alcohol for all the same reasons. Legalize it, control it like alcohol sales, and tax it. Money is saved because fewer law enforcement are resources used to combat the illegal sales, and money is not spent convicting and incarcerating offenders. It'll also lower crime by removing the black-market for pot. I think other crimes may also be reduced. How may times have cops responded to domestic abuse calls because a guy drank too much Jack and started knocking his wife around? I've smoked a lot of pot in my younger days and have been and still am around people that get high. Violence and pot don't usually go together. Though a stoner might try to kick your ass for your bag of Doritos. |
