Mnay people don't appericate what a Great Job our military is doing in Iraq, Even though i would not give one american life for Saddam, things could have been so much worse, then they are.
When the war started with Iraq I thought man we will have some where around 30,000- 60,000 troops killed in the up comming battles, I like many were so happy that did not happen.
But leave it up to the political leaders to screw things up. piss poor after plan, not accepting real generals request, and playing down a strong threat, and lets not forget the roll of big business in the political pot also.
Maybe this leader learned something, like ummm don't send in a whole army to get a bad guy, send in a few well trained marines to take out a bad guy!
I forgot we need the oil > another subject another day<

generally speaking, even the best laid plan goes right out the window after the first few shots go downrange.....

An Army company is marching through a dusty valley when they see a single Marine in dress blues on a hilltop saluting the sunset. The Army CO gets rather pissed that this Marine is engaged in such a frivolous activity while his Soldiers are humping through the dust, and he looks too good doing it as well.
"Cpl, take a fire team up there to kick that Marine's ass", he orders.
The fire team goes up, the Marine steps behind the hill and all hell breaks loose. Screaming, bones breaking, and pleas for mercy. Then silence. And the Marine returns to the hilltop and pops his salute back to the sunset.
The CO orders a squad up there with the same result and he's really getting pissed now. He orders an entire platoon up the hill. This time the same thing happens, only a few stragglers come crawling back over the hill yelling, "Get back, get back! It's a trap! There's two of them!" Smiler

Awright. I'll post some Marine jokes in the Off Topic - Jokes forum to be fair. Back on the topic, well, sort of....

Here's an article detailing the cost (in lives)- rather crude (at least to me) and none too understanding for those who have lost friends and family members over there (Considering the comparisons he makes - and the article title itself "Comparison Shopping"). There's a .pdf file that is supposed to go with the article, I have it, but it's not posted with the article here. It basically charts how, when compared to other wars, this war has been far less costly in lives.

http://www.worldmag.com/articles/11909

Here are some of the numbers from the chart:
WWII total deaths- 405,339 - per day 219.1 - rate of US population 132

Vietnam 58,200, p/d 18.1, per US popluation 26.9

Iraq 2,460, p/d 2.1, per US poulation 2.1

It goes all the way back to the Revolution, but I just chose a sampling rather than try to recreate the whole chart..

The US Marines are the best soldiers in the world. It is very unfortunate that their politicians & generals failed to prepare a long insurgency war in Iraq despite the repeated warnings receive from Muslim allies. These gallant marines are paying a heavy price for the poor planning of their politicians. tank

I dont think the insurgency will ever end. The whole reason for the insurgency is US policy in the middle east, we can not say we were sitting back and minding our own buisness when we got attacked in 2001. The problem is our policies financially push alot of people into a corner, when someones quality of life gets bad enough from US policy there is a high likley hood they will do something about it. We were never really truely attacked by the british in the revolutionary war but we were pushed into a corner and we lashed out, fortunatly for us we won. Just something to think about.

We have been targets of these attacks for better than 3 decades. Or have you forgotten all of that?

That fine, detract the issue, thats not going to change the fact that the US helped to create terrorism by putting dictators in power and through forign sanctions pushing people up against a wall economicly. The only difference between an iraqi and a terrorist is the terrorist chose to take action against his crumby situation.

You brought up the comment about the midle east and the end of WWII. I had to assume you were referencing Isreal....

So in your mind the ONLY difference between an Iraqi citizen and a terrorist, is the terrorist chooses to take action?

And which dictator did we put into power over there in the middle east? If thats where you are pointing this thread to?

How is it our fault that third world nations can't compete or keep up with the changing world?

By the way, you need to be much more specific with your responses. you mentioned sanctions, which sanctions are you speaking about, and against who?
