HAVANA (AP) -- Fidel Castro, who took control of Cuba in 1959, rebuffed repeated U.S. attempts to oust him and survived communism's demise almost everywhere else, temporarily relinquished his presidential powers to his brother Raul on Monday night because of surgery.
http://tinyurl.com/mko38 Beginning of the end? Or, as some reports about Raul, the beginning of new "harder-line" Cuba than ever before? Of course, many of these reports of the "hard-liner Raul" are "new". Some "leaked" reports speak glowingly of the previously little known brother. |

I for one hope he gets fleas in his beard.
However, it seems that Old-bussy-wiskers will made it this time. |

One of the quirks of US policy over Cuba has always given me a headache.. Why does the US pay ' rent' to Castro for Guantanamo?.. The beared one has a drawer full of uncashed rent cheques...
With this piece of Cuba in US hands and free of any interference from the Cuban military [ such as it is] why hasn't the US just flowen in or shipped down a big chunk of its armed forces, used Gitmo as a jump off point and just rolled up Cuba ousting castro and his ilk [ I mean if they can fly half way round the world to kick Saddam's ass...] Mission accomplished, USA gets one more island vacation spot, cheap labour pool for another call centre and fat cat Americans can, once again, enjoy cheap rum and cigars without feeling guilty about coming to Canada to load up on Cuba's ' exports '... yet no President has ever publically planned such an ' easy 'action, can't be out of concern for ' international condemnation ' as they've taken that from all fronts over ' incidents' in Grenada, Bosnia, Afghanistn, Iraq and a half dozen other places over the years.. anyone got the intel on American policy on this or lack thereof.. tis a puzzlement... [ of course as soon as Fidel croaks and oil is discovered off the coast... ] There I was , at the head of the old 68th... |

Most of the Cuban economy is supported by Cubans in exile that sends monthly money to their relatives from their comfy homes in Florida.

The lease for Cuba's land was signed before Castro took power. There was no expiration date on the lease, good in perpetuity. And Cuba was always way too tight with the USSR to risk a world war. Then The Wall fell, and I'm betting George I had an eye out for that in his second term...only Slick Willy C. came into office. He couldn't keep troops in Somalia afer a few dozen casualties, going to war in Cuba was unthinkable. Then damnit, George II was poised to finish all of dad's unfinished business. First Iraq, then the nasty communists off our shores. Then something horrible happened.... |
