US Sec/State Condolezza Rice announced that she had picked, oh, sorry, -that Pres. G.W. Bush, had picked one of his ' closest and most powerful advisors ' [ is there a T-shirt with that patented slogan? ], Karen Hughes to the post of: Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy

a move officials said would aggressively tackl;e the plummeting image of america abroad, particularly in the Arab world [ where, of ocurse, they just love meeting agressive fem-lib women in a traditionally male job - pushing a secular western agenda from the Great Satan ]..

but I digress

Ms Hughes in touting her qualifications, however, seems to have stubbed her toe [ metaphorically speaking ] and inadvertantly pointed out that maybe she fell asleep during Geography class...

" I grew up in an army family [ ooh, that could help ]...I was born in Paris [ blame her parents for the neonatal surrender monkey influence in her nascent period ] and lived OVERSEAS IN CANADA AND PANAMA ...."

when did my country get moved from being next to America??.. [ Damn, I'm not going to go to sleep ever again.. too much happens after dark .]..

nice to start off the new job with a credibility gap..

Aide: " Ms Hughes..the President wants you to go to China.."
Hughes: " ooh, is that near the Walmart?? "

Rocketeer, don’t you know that having any inherent qualifications for a political position could severely limit one’s ability to place a lasting historical stamp on the position? Infamous is still famous. Also, if you live in Michigan, Canada is almost over seas (they are rather large lakes, though, closer to a river at Detroit which is just another city with a French name).

Wrong Karen Hughes or you have completely different definition for feminist-liberal than the rest of the world. She's a pro-life, church attending Republican. Pretty much the antithesis of fem-lib.

And the only Arabs we're suffering an image problem with are the despots and their jihadist henchmen.

Voting Iraqis and protesting Lebanese are pleased as punch with America and President Bush. Egypt's Mubarek (sic) is feeling the democratization pressure and amending their constitution to include multiple party elections, and so on.

As for the overseas / Canadian thing, if that's your only ammo against Hughes, your case is absurdly weak. She was obviously speaking of living abroad. But hey, it's your axe to grind. If you're trying to convince people of anything though you really need to shoot for accuracy.

I live in Detroit.

If you live in Michigan you should know that you have to go south to get to Canada from Detroit. Instead of being "overseas" it's just a bridge away much like the Bronx is in relation to Manhattan.

You say Detroit is just another city with a French name. I gather you don't like Detroit. Yet you live in Manchester which is just a bedroom community to it's much more dynamic neighbor, Ann Arbor, where most of the residents al least have a pulse.Big Grin

You should also know that Manchester got it's name from a place called "Ontario". Big Grin

Having been born and raised in the Flint area (yes you may make disparaging comments), we always used Port Heron instead of going south to the Detroit area and on to Canada.

You must have forgotten the tunnel to Windsor (formally named Richmond) which I have taken. As for the crack about Detroit, I graduated from high school in Grand Blanc (Great White) which is another of those French names. Detroit has many problems but I have no problems with it or any of its suburbs (as long as that does not extend to Troy – which is a stretch). Most of my income has come with dealing with the Motor City.

Did you know that Detroit is the only American city to have been surrendered to a foreign power? The English in the War of 1812.

Manchester, England may have has some small influence on my communities name. We are a farming community that has started turning into a bedroom community within the last ten years or so because of housing costs in A2. The sheep are not happy.
