On this 35th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, I would like to share my views on the issue of abortion.

Life begins at the point of conception. No one can deny that after a human being is conceived it will develop into the very same being as those debating this issue. What astounds me is that those who favor abortion went through an identical development stage as the being they are condemning to death. Would these very same people agree that a similiar choice should have been made about their own existence? Abortion today is used primarily as a birth control of convenience because people are too self-centered to take precautions. They prefer their own pleasurable self-indulgence over the care and sanctity of the life they created. What ever happened to taking responsibility for one's actions in this country? Is it too much to ask a woman who has conceived to place the child into adoption? Nine months of discomfort is nothing compared to life in prison for voluntary manslaughter! Does the father of the child have a say in this? And what about the constitution of the United States? Are not all people conceived in this country deserving of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? I believe abortion is a crime against humanity and should be outlawed. We need to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision and get back to cherishing life in this country. For a country that murders it's children cannot be far from self destruction.

I see no mention made here of those conceived by rape and incest. Are you advocating that the victim of a rape work with the rapist to raise this child?

It is not poor people who are doing all of this and why is there not a law that determines when life begins? Well -- look who is taking advantage of the situation.

On a personal basis, I am against abortion but even the Bible says that the soul is given to a child at birth so it is a matter of choice for people. And Gunny brings up a good point about rape.

I wonder – are you into punishing the sinner regardless of the consequences to the innocent?

As abortion rates continue to drop every year, the pro-lifers will have less ammo and reasons to reverse Roe v. Wade.

The best way to continue to reduce the number of abortions is to continue to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies. It's called sex education.

For once I agree with Fox on that. Sex education is a big problem in South Africa too, where the teenage pregnancy rate is sky-rocketing, and young people tend to have sex without thought of consequences (such as pregnancies or HIV/AIDS).

It is my personal opinion that life begins somewhere between the start to the middle of the third trimester to birth, and the cases for life beginning at conception have all been really weak. And frankly what brings a country to self destruction is the idiotic, counter productive medieval faux-morals brought onto the table by people like you. The only crime against humanity is that you insane fundamentalists are trying to control peoples bodies and legislate ignorance in ways that cause the spread of HIV and other STD's much more than the truly humane message of safe sex. You blather on about how abortion is a form of birth control and that people didn't take precautions, well you know what, that's only a fraction of the situations, many are when people DID take precautions, so you know what? If you think you can try and rule over what people can do with their own bodies and attempt to legislate your own backwards sense of morality on others, then you've got another thing coming buddy? I generally don't get so riled up but it's people, but when you "people" and I think i may be stretching the definition to apply it to people like you, spread things that amount to anything from ignorance to just outright lies, you not only hurt and disgrace yourselves but the human race as a whole. You wanna save people start handing out condemns before the entirety of sub-saharan africa dies from AIDS.

Yeah, well, guess what, wiseguy? Our government IS handing out free condoms around every corner of the country, but that DOESN'T WORK!

The reason is (now don't take this the wrong way) that people who have lived in a township ALL THEIR LIFE and who honestly don't know better, from lack of education, tend to interpret it wrong when they are handed free condoms. The problem is that they see it as "Oh, I got a condom, now I can go crazy and not take any further precautions". It's not that they're stupid, they just don't have the education to properly understand this.

Now, before you go on telling me that i don't know what I'm talking about, I live in Sub-Saharan Africa, and I've dealt with these people on more than one occasion.

1. First off, handing out condoms does help and the results have been shown in different countries.
2. Second I never said that that's ALL that should be done, ok? But I frankly don't see how someone as ignorant as the person who I was adressing in my post would be able to help with education, mkay?
3. I never said the people in sub-saharan africa were stupid, so please before you go spouting off at me, please, read my posts a little better.
4. Not to mention you missed the overall point of my post, which was the relgious fundamentalism is drastically undermining the effort to stop teen-pregnancy and the spread of HIV.

I did not say that you called them stupid. I used the phrase "it's not that they're stupid, they just don't know better" to infer a point. handing out free condoms might be helpful, but it certainly is not as good as it could be over here in Africa.

As for Abortion, I think Abortion for the heck of it is wrong. I would only support it in extreme cases, such as that of a woman who was impregnated through rape, and other similar cases.

No one has abortions "for the heck of it" (and if they do then that's kinda creepy) Auf, and I'd have to say very few pro-choice activists would argue that that is a good reason to have an abortion. Having an abortion so that you're life is not ruined by the stigma of pregnancy and the massive responsibility of a child when one cannot handle it, I do believe that abortion is the only responsible thing TO do, especially with our adoption system already terribly overburdened. There are many circumstances in which having a child can ruin one's life.
