I know for many, including this old fart, its hard to accept some changes going on during these times of "war" but understandable to a point. In the old days when i joined the military (14yrs) I did so for several reasons, one was to preserve the american way of life, be it with its changes, freedoms, etc. I can't help but to feel in a few ways we lost many of the values of a nation that made it above all others. The freedoms we had as kids are gone, our kids are growing up in a time of "security"
The rights that many gave thier life to preserve freedom is slowly being reduced. At this rate will our nation be nothing more then a police state in 50 years? I dunno Hope not, lets face it, this "war" against Fanatics can last centuries. Some where down the line if an American refuses follow a rule under "security" will that mean that thier wrong, or anti-american? Or maybe taken as a honor to the military and those that served this nation for the freedoms which it was built on. We do need a clear path from our political powers that be, but we must also know what we give up, for the many who fought and died , we need returned one day. As a Nation built on freedoms we can not afford to be Conquered from within.

What makes this country different is elections, the problem is we have had bush for almost 6 years now, thats enough time to cause alot of problems that the next administration has a chance to fix. I was always told the clinton administartion was so bad and I bought into that becasue people around me told me that, but looking back it wasent so bad compared to what bush is doing.

"If you are willing to sacrifice freedom for security you deserve neither" and thats exactly what we did when congress signed to extend the security bill, so that means its not just the administration its also our congress which are elected in by each states population, so then I ask the question:

Do you trust the american voter? Does the voter really have a choise anymore, and I mean really, I dont mean some philisopical BS, if I spend my vote on a third party what are the chances of my candidate actually taking office (other than at a local small city level) so you end up voting for the lesser of 2 evils not between good and evil. All of the priciples this nation was built on are fading ever since about WW1 WW2 time frame, they are even talking about taking in god we trust off of money, etc. This is the time frame you see military contracts pop up and UCMJ which is constitutionaly questionable, but of course that doesent matter anymore because the constitution is a fancy piece of paper in a museum. Where you start to see more and more the federalization of the US and less and less states rights

It is actually a handfull of people that hold this nation up, the inventors, engineers (and I dont even want to hear it, just because you disagree with my political views does not change the fact that engineers, inventors and scientists build societies) doctors, etc. The no child left behind act is a sham, it teaches to an exam and brings down the potential of thoes that can accomplish more than the "standard", if someone cant pass a reading test by the 8th or 9th grade they need to be pulled instead of disadvantageing the AP students down to a low common denominator. Less than 15% of graduating high school seniors have the prerequisites to even enter into a competive engineering or science program in college, how sad is that.

Also (this is sort of a side topic but another example of our rights being trampled) the soloman act, in which schools that get any government funding have to allow schools (and not just high schools even state colleges) the personal information of the students to military recruiters. They have an opt out clause when it should be an opt in clause, I shouldent have to take time out of my day to tell the military not to harras me or try to manipulate (as they did with me, a mistake I learned from and moved on with) people I know. The army claims its doing so good with recruiting, retention, etc, then why does this act even exist.

Free government money to go to college is getting harder to get and the spread between the cost of education and the grants are getting wider every year, let me tell you it only takes a few generations of dummys to sink a nation, and once this country is stupified its going to take a long time to pull out of it. You can say im crazy and I need to get back on some pills but that wont change reality. This country has walked away from God and gotten hard. I had a real eye opener when I did a year in the guard and that was just basic and a few drill weekends, and the mentality disrespect and hate from numerous individuals blew my mind, and of course they lagitimize it all, its training to make you hard, I dont want to be "hard" I dont want to beat my wife or scream at my kids because im a POS, I want to try to be like jesus and the military does not like to make that easy.

Thats enough ranting for now and if you want to respond with a one liner about how I need my pills, dont be surprised with the way you see this country going in the future, unless of course you want a nazi america.

A "nazi America"...capitalize our nation,bub!
Hmm,let's see.Concentration camps...NO,political police,Gestapo,SS...NO,dictatorship...NO,reprssion of civil liberties...NO,wholesale round up of citizens...NO,etc etc.
America can never become a dictatorship.GIVE US LIBERTY OR GIVE US DEATH,is still a living breathing value here.

If you hamper the war effort of one side, you automatically help out that of the other. In practice, "he that is not with me is against me. "
The quickest way of ending a war is to lose it.

I don't agree with the other post, but the fact is rights are slowly being taken awaym with out a clear time when they will be returned, looking back a nazi germany, say 1933-36
Military bases used as Concentration camps, here we use cuba and out source to toher countries,NO,political police, homeland security,NO,reprssion of civil liberties. yes tell that to the kid who goes and get a book at the libarary only to learn his choice of material is now being watched by Homeland Security and databased.NO,wholesale round up of citizens. if i remember right, nazi germany started with non citizens first, clearing out the country.NO,dictatorship still on the list..
Don't get me wrong this country i would take a bullet for, but if things keep changing and your rights are decreased under the term "sercurity" and the freedoms are no longer freedoms, .......

The comparison to nazi germany was maybe a bit extreme, but none the less the same events that took place then are taking place now only with a different twist and stepped up over a longer period of time as not to draw immediate attention. You have to creep it in and cover it up, in order for the people not to be outraged. And hopefully alot of this nonsense will be remedyed after the bush administration is over. However if you are smart enough about the whole thing you can stay away from the nonsense.

Im not sure what you disagree with, the 3 or 4 paragraphs of fact or the off hand nazi remark, I really need to watch myself with comments like that, because instead of noticing the fact you focus in on "ooo he said nazi", and ignore the fact that this administrations is destroying our education system, bankrupting the country and degrading our rights and that started roughly around the WW1 to WW2 time frame when UCMJ and military contracting was created to enable the government to take advantage of someone trying to better themselves, but because it happened a long time ago 50-60 yrs ago currant military practices (last 50 to 60 yrs) have earned the socially acceptable title of tradition, so if your family has a tradition of beating your wife does that mean its ok? The problem is no one thinks or questions, I get it from everywhere the government said so or the military told me so, so I must obey (beep beep beep), no one asks themselves does this make sense and if not why the hell am I doing it (of course I dont get it and I need to take my pills), because I dont eat rocks and sit at a bar and drink and get in fights and beat my wife. Alot of people in the country need to wake up

If voting were that important... THEY wouldn't let you do it....

It can be said without a doubt that a number of ' liberties' have been curtailed/revoked/outlawed under the rationale of ' homeland security/anti-terrorism..

only time will tell if these steps were necessary..The Patroit Act and its codicils have a grandfather cclause to them, meaning that they are for a limited time and are expected to ' expire' at a certain date.. the proof of the Freedoms 'in America's way of life will be whether, at that time, the Administration ' renews' or makes permanent those laws or allows them to be shelved...

guess we'll have to see what Madame President hillary will do when she takes over from Dubya and has to recall the troops from Iraq/Afghanistan and elsewhere without making it look like the USA is caving into to world/outside pressure and leaving the door open for Islamic Jihadist fundamentalists to go hog [ oops. no pig reference not kosher/halal ] wild over their ' victory' over the great Satan...
