Comes with my shift; 2300-0700. The dark side. Bu I like it. This is when all the "interesting" people are out. And when we're not busy it affords me the chance to read through the days posts and get caught up.

Been at this shift for the better part of 14 years now. Only bothers me when my Reserve weekends come around and I have to convert to day shift hours. But its not that bad, and I love the nights. My daughter tells her friends , "All that's out at night is vampires, werewolves, weirdos, druggies, and my dad. And of those the worst is my dad." My little girl...God love here. Big Grin In fact my tag line at mil.com she gave me..."Nothing exists in the dark that doesn't exsist in the light, except me." She knows me so well.

This is why I call myself TOW Gunner:

Since I was in a MEUSOC, I was lucky enough to fire three TOW 2 missiles (in training, never saw combat).

Well, the Tarawa was my home for six months. It took me to a lot of cool places, including Subic, Thailand, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Korea, etc. Of course the Marines stay in the berthing area in the bottom of the ship. Super crowded. But several of us would go to different parts on the ship and watch the ocean. You could go out on the aft and watch the ship's wake. Sometimes you would see dolphins, sharks, or whales (near Japan). And then there were the flying fish - straight out of Darwin's theory. At night, since you were hundreds if not thousands of miles from shore, you could see many stars and even satellites, which looked like tiny stars cruising across the sky. When they would dump the trash at sea, the sharks would show up. If you shined a spotlight down you could see dozens of sharks feeding off the trash. Then there was the well-deck. My TOW Hummers were to be the first to hit the beach, along with some .50 cals from Heavy Weapons platoon. So we were prepositioned on the LCACS. Whenever the LCACS would go out, we would sit in our Humvees for the ride. But it was a bitch getting down into the well deck with all of our equipment.

Before the Tarawa, I was also on another Westpac from Jan 88 to Jun 88 on the LHA Peleliu.
