Here in Dallas, a few resourceful evacuees went out and found jobs almost immediately. Most of the rest are sitting in their apartments doing absolutely nothing. They refuse to get a job. In Houston, authorities are already seeing troubles for their good-hearted efforts:

"Concerned by a spike in homicides and other violent crime in certain neighborhoods, Houston Mayor Bill White Monday called on FEMA to fund a $6.5 million task force to focus on "hot spots" for crime.

While White and Police Chief Harold Hurtt emphasized that the uptick in crime is not solely attributable to Hurricane Katrina evacuees, White said the Federal Emergency Management Agency should pay the bill because of the strain the 100,000 to 150,000 new residents have put on the Houston Police Department."

Not racist at all. I'm familiar with about 20 Katrina families at an apartment complex in Dallas. Only about three people out of the 20 families actively went out to look for jobs. These three found jobs almost immediately. The rest are doing nothing. They have no plans to get a job or return to New Orleans where there are plenty of jobs. In fact, the apartment manager has pleaded with some of the evacuees to find jobs, telling them that after their housing vouchers run out then she'll be forced to kick them out. Luckily, for the families, new vouchers were made available for an extra month through January. But after that, who knows. One of the employable evacuees (who isn't looking for a job) was telling me she had lived in projects all over the United States, including New Orleans, Kansas City, somewhere East, etc., and she would continue to do so. It is the vestiges of the failed Welfare State that has destroyed the work ethics of people from all races.

Sad but true.
The failed social experiment of welfare during the 1960's destroyed the family values of many,replacing work with a handout.

It also appears that the limits on welfare that forces some of the people back to work is not working either.

I have no problem helping people over a bad spell or taking care of those who physically cannot work but healthy lay abouts should be booted off the dole and made to work when jobs are available!

This is not a race issue, it is an issue of people who need to work to improve their lives and not useing race or ethnic background as an excuse.
