On January 30, 1933, The Lone Ranger made his debut on WXYZ radio in Detroit -- the William Tell Overture would never be the same again.
From the Detroit News/Free Press. I can remember listening to the Lone Ranger on the radio in the early 1950s along with some other programs that I cannot remember. Talk about feeling old at times. "It is fatal to enter any war without the will to win it" DOUGLAS MacARTHUR, 1952 |

Hiiiyyo,you are correct sir.
And you always knew that the damn plane was going to: 1) Develop engine trouble in flight 2) Develop engine trouble in flight during another crisis 3)Develop engine trouble in flight during a nasty storm 4)Develop engine trouble in flight and go down. Always the good pilot though,he never wrecked the plane, and always walked away to solve the latest catastrophy coming his way. I never missed an episode. IMPROVISE;ADAPT;OVERCOME! |

another radio show was the original Gunsmoke .. with William Conrad as Marshall Dillon ..it's obvious why he didn't make the transition from radio to TV with the show .. a little more trivia about Conrad is that he did a lot of producing (77 Sunset Strip was one of his shows) as well as voice overs and acting in his career ..and of course he did a lot of work with Rocky and friends ..

Old radio shows that made for many a scary night were; The Shadow [ Victor Jory ]" What evil lurks in the hearts of men?.. The Shadow knows! " - they made a mediocre movie not too long ago with one of the Baldwins, I think...
and: Inner Sanctum.. the sound of the door creaking open still gives me shivers.. Hear that they're bringing the Green Hornet back as as a feature film...trivia bit: the Green Hornet was Britt Reid, newspaper publisher who supposedly was the Lone Ranger's great grandson or nephew or some such.. Back to the Lone Ranger... Know that Clayton Moore played the masked man for most of the episodes on TV, with John Hart filling in for one 'series ', but anyone recall who was the third guy to play him on the show?.. Through it all, his faithful Indian companion was portrayed by Jay Silverheels, an Canadian ' Indian ' from the Six Nations reserve.. not too far from me, actually [ they got a nice little display about him in the Band Museum ].. Can't say I was impressed by the Major motion Picture they made back a few.. some numnul named Clinton Spillsbury played the Ranger - kid was so bad and ' light on his feet' they dubbed all his lines using Stacey Keatch...only good part was Christopher Lloyd as the villain, even then the movie sucked the big one... okay, that's enough...I'm showing my age.. There I was , at the head of the old 68th... |
