Sideways is the latest collaboration of director Alexander Payne who also directed such successful hits as Election and About Schmidt. If you liked About Schmidt you are going to love Sideways. Paul Giamatti stars as a recently divorced failed writer who teaches junior high school English and takes his best friend a former well known actor Jack for a week long trip before he gets married into California wine country. Along the way they meet two waitresses played by Sandra Oh and Virginia Madsen. Jack ends of having an affair with the waitress and begins to wonder whether he should call off the wedding while Miles questions whether he made the right choice in getting a divorce. Sideways is full of laughs and some of the funniest scenes are provided by El Paso born actor Thomas Haden Church who plays Jack. The movie was written by Payne and Jim Taylor, from the novel by Rex Pickett. One sign that you have just seen a good movie is that you want to go see it again. After viewing Sideways I have to tell you that I will go see it again and it is going on my list of one of the top ten movies this year. When it comes time to announce nominations for this years Oscars I would not be surprised for it to be nominated in several categories.
