I am not seeing a chat thread in here. If I have missed it, then my apologies. If I have not missed it then shall we have the complete off topic anything goes thread?

I can start. How might everyone be? For those in the military what made you want to serve? How long have you been enlisted? For civilians what made you come here?

I am a civilian so for me it was to support the troops, and be around people with purpose. If my friend SPC Mannen makes it back from the sandbox I'll be on cloud nine... and REALLY drunk. *LOL*

Well, Elizabeth... I'm here...

See you got a couple of questions..

What made me want to serve?

asked and answered elsewhere.. " Seemed like a good idea at the time.." LOL scared sh!tless when I signed up, but never regretted since.. Whole family is/was serving now [ almost, youngest is 12 and can't sign on just yet..]

As for how I ended up on this site?.. Hell, that's easy.. Gunny invited me after the Great GI Jargon Conflagration.. there are a couple of refugees from that war posting here.

Anyway.. I'm off to give a lecture this morning so check in later.. happy to have a female on board.. stick around.. and don't be too shy... we don't bite [ unless invited ] but we do tend to scare the girls away after a bit for some reason..I think its because Typhoon haunts Youtube and forgets to bathe...

That goes for me also Elizabeth. I from the GI Jargon site also, was there the night they shut it down. Things got a little to personnal and the owner wanted out.
Why I needed to join? Needed direction at the time, needed to do something and give back for what we had. In my family it was impressed on us that we needed to earn our rights as a citizen. It was back in 1974 and I did a little over 4 years, mostly overseas in Germany as a tanker/mechanic.
Gunny & Rocketeer lead me here after a brief stint on the British military site "Arse" British Army Rumor Service where most of the drifting Jargonites landed after the site went down.

Good morning, gentlemen!

Rocketeer, and Mech, I have a deep military pedigree with in my family and friends. I am always fascinated as to why people join the military. In many cases some sort of interesting story follows. Thank you for sharing with me your reasons.

Thankfully I am not easily scared off, nor am I shy. In fact I have a hard time shutting my own self up. So far this site seems great! I love the look of it, and it is not hard to use at all once you get the hang of the way it’s set up.

As far as my friend who is deployed I can’t spill the entire can of beans, but can say that I am sure you understand what I mean when I say SPC is in the “5th Infantry brigade in OEF”. O_O cuss

To me there is no bettter place to swap stories than right here. Sometimes you a few disruptions, but by and by it's a decent place to hang your hat, as long as the Jack, Malt whiskey and beer flo cheerw.

Mech, agreed! I feel comfy around soldiers. I went to FT Lewis, the Bremerton Naval port, and to the recruiting station with my soldier and never have I felt more at home. Sadly I can not enlist due to a bad ankle I was born with, a bit of a defiant past in school, and a bit of a record of deep depression, but I do what I can to help the troops. This site is good for me, and glad to be here to be speaking to people with a pourpose. I try to be a decent person. That is what matters now, and in the future. It might intrest you to know that I am drinking Strongbow cider. MMMMMMM!

Now who wants a shot?

I can't do beer. I always wake up feeling like a beached whale even if I don't get wasted off it. So I stick with whisky, cider, and wine. I like hard alcohol of nearly any sort, but tequilla gives me a nasty hangover.

" ...hard liquor of any sort..."

oooh, a hard drinkin' devil babe.....-sigh - if only I was 20 -erm - 40 years younger...
nowadays I can only rent booze and then for only a short time...um - capacity/retention issues...[ old age... mumblegrumble... ]

So..what to chat about?... hmmm... guess should start off with what attracted you to the military [ and I don't mean a handsome guy in uniform with a winning smile and big muscles ]

with me and the missus I think it was genetic...her side of the family going back to 1720's were either military or clergy so she ended up as both!! The kids all signed up as they became of age, despite what I told them.. guess they didn't believe my tales....

Gave me the entree into my present 'career'...so can't complain [ not that anyone listens... ]

Your turn.. I got to go and bunk down two visiting daughters and a pack of grandkid rugrats who want to hear another daring adventure of ol' Rocketeer...

Well, Rocketeer it sounds like your wife’s family has an interesting history. Very nice! I bet she is very proud, and rightfully so!

I suppose that my grandfather Ken has much to do with my deep adoration for our troops. I always admired him for his service to our country, and proud of the fact that he survived WW2. He was a good man, too. I wrote a little about his life in the Navy threads when you get a chance to read it. I also find that you guys really have a lot more appreciation for life, un-like many have a purpose and not afraid to do some very amazing things.

In truth I never really wanted to be a military girlfriend. I did not want to be lumped into the cliché that most military spouses get lumped into, and did not want to have to deploy my boyfriend (or husband) to war due to the fact that I thought that I wouldn’t be able to do it. SO, I stuck to befriending our troops until I met SSG Rawlins, and love just happened. We meet on the Dimmu Borgir forums a few years ago, and before I knew he was military police was in love. He is an amazing man. He has served as an M.P and Airborne for 19 years. Been deployed 9 times, and a 5 time war vet. I am with him until the end of time. He was my best friend before my lover as well.

Yes, I am a black metal Satanic woman. I can handle my drink, and my men. Thankfully SSG Rawlins can handle me. I drink a lot, listen to brutal music, and am not shy at all with my opinions. Most women are too afraid to call someone stupid, but I am not. I have told many people that they were worthless pieces of s&@# that needed to be killed due to their lack of use on this Earth.

To reply to your first sentence...
There was a question about such a item at the beginning; but, it was tabled from the get go.

Too contriversial, and the possibility that things would get either completely out of hand, or way too personal, or for OPSEC/PERSEC.

These forums are fine as they are...just be considerate and respectful to everyone...

It makes my having to come aboard that much easier...

Hail, Admin!I never go to a website with intent on dis-respect. Especially to a military fourm. I am sure you guys have had hippies come here just to be rude, though.

Well, if we're going to keep this chat thingy going I guess we should... well, chat, actually..

So.. Elizabeth:

when you've finished sacrificing the neighbourhood cats to his Satanic Majesty, what do you do for fun?. got a day job?

Me, I'm supposed to be some kind of authority on military history so I can go around telling people things like George Washington only bathed on Thursdays in months with an "R" in it, and, for some reason, people believe me, nod and say " wow, I didn't know that ".. and then give me exorbitant fees for telling them...

any hobbies?

I like to go around blowing up Americans [ in the nicest way possible and with their full co-operation, of course, ] by reliving my youth [ so the young whippersnappers claim ] playing at oldy tyme soldiering.. I'm just prepping my aches and pains and stiff joints for just such a sojourn this weekend and have dialed the WayBack machine for the 19th century.

[ you can check it out at www.wasagaundersiege1812.com if you've got a few moments to waste.]

just one of many events I haunt throughout the good weather which, I hope, we'll get more of once this global warming thing kicks in..

shouldn't expose myself to PERSEC issues but been married 37 years now [ to the same woman for some reason which escapes me ] and have 6 kids [ yeah, I'm -ahem - a potent one ] and don't expect to slow down much in my dotage, though, I'm finding that ' liniment ', applied both externally and internally, to aid mobility is required more and more lately..

so, enough about shy little me.
You?

[edited to add. Why did a banner for 'obituaries' pop up at the bottom, of my post? I don't look that bad, do I ?]

Rocketeer, I work three jobs. My bread and butter is working for an antique shop called St Charles Place, the other is metal journalism for a site called beyondthedarkhorizon.com, and taking care of my war vet. Though taking care of my war vet and my journalism is a labor of utter love. I love to write, listen to metal as much as I can, and as of late I am glued to Spike network, and the Military channel. I also have loads of friends in the metal kingdom I love to hang out with, and I love to go to shows. Soon my soldier and I are going to make our own black metal which should be fun. I also promote a band called Hil The Night from L.A California. They are a death and thrash influenced black metal band, and have become good friends of mine. I am going to start working for another black metal band from my area called Inquinok. I have had the pleasure of interviewing two good bands in my journalism one being A Transylvanian Funeral from Indiana, and Inquinok. My brain is always on my soldier, metal, war, my work, and my friends and family. I am odd breed of woman. I hate salons, and shopping for shoes and clothing. I much rather go to a show, make love to my solder, and go explore the world. As soon as I get my passport I want to go to Norway, Sweden, and Spain. I am Spanish Basque, and Swedish. I am sure you know what that means Mr. History Buff! Cool

Once I get the chance I shall check out your site.

Metalhead offshoot are you?... I used to groove on Devo and the Mothers of Invention and the Fugs and Kraftverk and all sorts of 'alternate sounds' that have since become mainstream and 'classic' as the fans age.. Now I'm into Baroque and Renaissance, Early Music.. which, at my age, is much easier on the ears...something about decibels and health issues, not to mention music that actually has a melody..

Still, I pride myself that I haven't fallen into the clutches of John Tesh and, though I hail from the same nation, Celine Dion is like fingernails on a chalkboard to my tender aural appendages...think I've missed the boat on HipHop/Rap or whatever its called this week..scatological references, obscenity and profanity couched in badly shouted rhymes presented by bejewelled, poorly dressed men who can't keep their pants from falling down isn't on my top ten downloads, either...

sorry, the curmudgeon dial must have been stuck for a moment...
