Well boys and grils, it's time for the ol' Rocketeer to stuff his canvas into the bags on the back of the mule and pull on the itchy-scratchy wool for another go round..
got my dried pemmican, my flask of guid scotch whisky, my trusty musket has been field stripped and the grey hairs on my fathead have been duly slicked back with Dr. Fowler's Premiumn Bear Grease.. I'm stepping into the Wayback Machine and slipping back to 1813 for a bit of whoop-it-up and making things blow-up-real-good for another week.. leaving tonight, back on Monday, Good Lord willing... check things out at www.wasagaundersiege1812.com if you've a mind to.. [ scroll down through the event photos and you'll spot my staring back in one shot - shot 12 counting from the top.. I'm the incredibly handsome Sgt. of Horse Artillery majestic in blue and yellow with a fine white plumed helmet -and spreading midriff - must remember to cut back on the pork roast this year ] don't let rppearso ruin the site by chasing away the new recruits with crap advice while I'm gone... There I was , at the head of the old 68th... |

Notice the beer stein in the background? Any bets that the nice little field desk is really a converted ice box full of crew? Not to mention the bikini babes running around.....

Damn Rocketeer, those sideburns rock. Give the 1800's my best, and watch out for those time traveling bikini babes. Ha! He lives to tell the tale another day!..
As to the magnificent Imperial 'tache and burns, I'll have you know that they are quite the ' babe magnet ' and add immeasurable stature to the image: LOL.. Still, haven't been able to empty the duffle and put the feet up after the visit to the 19th century.. Seems I have been 'recalled' to active duty.. The Good Padre was unable to secure a staff car and driver for her Base Inspection Tour, unassigned personnel seem to be thin on the ground at the moment.. So she has ' assigned ' me to drive a ' personal vehicle ' [ for which she is re-imbursed mileage and a given a per diem ] so that she can work in the back seat on her laptop and cell phones..I, meanwhile must endure chauffering about in blazer and grey pants, white shirt and regimental tie [ thankfully I can forego the jaunty cheesecutter cap ]. I am advised that there will be ' perks ' for my efforts.. Actually made one short run today, but leave on an extended trip tomorrow until Friday with her having to hit four bases in four days covering about 800 miles...while she's off in meetings and inspections, I get some time to ' explore ' until summoned ... actually spent part of the day at the Air Base chatting with some air vets who are restoring the last Halifax bomber - pulled from a Norwegian Lake a few years back -magnificent beast about 75-80 % resuscitated... Got to go press some shirts and put a polish on my dress boots..don't you boys go blowing up the internet while I'm away.. Also have two more reports from the boy..will post them when I return.. seems things are getting dicey where he's squatting... ciao for now... There I was , at the head of the old 68th... |

I know the aircraft you are referring to. Did they get the engines mounted back on the wings yet? I do know the hanger is small, so much so that they can't extend the landing gear or install the aft fuselage. Too bad you weren't able nto get any pictures. I know a magazine that would love to have some of this aircraft.

Wow is all I can say. http://www.northernblue.ca/mblog/index.php?/archives/22...play-at-Trenton.html This is the article about the Halifax recovered from Norway. Made it back in one piece..can stop calling the missue " Ma'am " and get back to cooing ' snookeypie ' once more...only one ' task' left on the to do list.. got to go visit the Mother-in-Law on monday [ oh, joy, oh, rapture ]...actually isn't that bad as Father-in-Law is Ex-Brit army [ the 8th - served in Burma and points East during WWII ] and full of old war stories so we can swap bits about past/present while the women ' natter on ' about kids and grandkids, etc.. ..
Gunny: The Halifax is pretty much [ on the outside ] up to snuff [ wasn't allowed a peek inside ] one Engine is still in the rebuild stage, but the rest are mounted.. The plane is housed in the new wing [ purpose built ] of the museum and looks grand.. Apparently the Minister of defence made a brief visit the day before I arrived and he was 'embarrassed ' into committing the government into paying for a concrete floor for the building [ its just gravel now with some artificial turf spread under the plane ]... my uncle was a Mid-Upper in a Halifax in WWII and got shot down over Germany.. This model is an earlier version and doesn't have the mid upper turret, but is still an impressive beast... Spent Tues. haunting my daughter's old stomping grounds at Royal Military College.. They have a neat little museum in housed in one of the five Martello Towers that ring Kingston harbour...also spent a bit of time poking about the Marine museum where they have an old Coast Guard ship I used to swim around when I was a kid ..This old boat used to sail from Thunder Bay through Lake Superior, Huron and Michigan keeping the channels open.. now its a ' bed and breakfast ' ffs!!...The rest of the day poked about the Old Fort on the hill though was dissappointed in the extent of the displays this visit.. Still one impressive 'room' on the the USMC which comes up each year to put on a 'show ' with the fort guard... Wed and Thurs spent in the ' nation's capital..we had accomodations in a spiffy little suite next to HMCS Bytown [ Naval Club ] and just around the corner from the 1879 Barracks home to the Gov. Gen.'s Foot Guards and Cameron Highlanders of Canada and their own nifty little museums.. Woke up each morning to the sound of Pipes and Mil Band as the Ceremonial Guard for Parliament hill march out of the Barracks each morning for their parade to the Hill for the daily ' Changing of the Guard ' - all scarlet tunics, bearskin busby's ..etc... all in 35C+ temps.. better those young boys and not me!!... While the Good Padre was off on her duties, I got to wander about the various messes and other backrooms chatting up the the bar stewards, mess sgts., and duty staff who know which rooms contain the ' good stuff '...picked up a neat little book by Richard Holmes called " Sahib " about the British during the Raj and Empire in India.. sort of a ' sequel ' to his book ' Red Coats ' - a history of the Brit Army during 17th to 19th centuries... got another ' note' from the boyo in the Sudan and will post the latest info for Monday , if I can... Things aren't too ' nice' for UNMO's these days, given the Israeli/hezbollah situation.. We lost a Canadian Observer when the Israelis blew up an observation post killing four UN boys...makes you think... There I was , at the head of the old 68th... |
