The Discovery Channel is conducting a poll to find the greatest American. The list is down to 25, and unfortunately, contains names such as George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Oprah Winfrey. There are others on the list who are probably not in the top 25 either. Here are a few Americans I believe should be in the top 25. Some are on Discovery's list, some are not: George Washington Benjamin Franklin Thomas Jefferson Alexander Hamilton Andrew Jackson Abraham Lincoln Teddy Roosevelt Franklin D. Roosevelt Ronald Reagan Albert Einstein The Wright Brothers Henry Ford Thomas Edison Martin Luther King Douglas MacArthur George Patton Mark Twain NASA Astronauts Maybe should be on list: Walt Disney Elvis Presley Bob Hope Hopefully, either George Washington or Abraham Lincoln will win. |

REAGAN WINS!!!
All I can say is HA HA to Discovery Channel and AOL. It appears they weren't too keen on Reagan winning, judging by the complete biography at AOL. The biography is one of the most biased I've seen. They did their best to hurt Reagan. For example: "As chief executive Reagan established an effective image of strong-mindedness tempered by occasional self- deprecation. Despite jibes by political opponents that he was lazy and lacked knowledge on many issues, he maintained generally high ratings in the public opinion polls. An assassination attempt by John Hinckley in March 1981 wounded him slightly, but served also to boost further his popular support." But the American people have spoken! http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/greatestamerican/greatestamerican.html |

Check out Clinton's biography. He gets the credit for economic prosperity.

OPRAH WINFREY! NUMBER 9?
I stopped reading the list after that, figured it was worthless. Might as well have put up candidates like Michael Moore and Rush Limbaugh(to be fair and put up morons from both ends of the spectrum). Holy crap, I just read the top 100 nominees, both of them are on it. This list IS worthless. When Oprah Winfrey (and Bill Clinton, and ELVIS PRESLEY?) is considered to be more influential than Thomas Edison or Albert Einstein, I feel sorry for and disappointed in my country. I have to partially blame myself, as I didn't think this important enough to vote myself.... This message has been edited. Last edited by: patoloco, |

Americans are so shallow. I am assuming that most of the people voting did not know who some of the truly great Americans even were. Most people have not read anything about history since they were in school and only did so then because they had to.
I would discount any president past Truman because the information that makes history is still coming out. Reagan had his problems along with his accomplishments but it is too soon to rate him against someone like Lincoln for either the good or the bad. With those answers I have come to the conclusion that America is doomed.
