I spent some time on the U.S.S. Navarro an APA, for the non Squid that was the designation at the time for, troop transport. To say they rode rough would be an understatement.
During rough seas the mess decks had to be secured, mess tables and benches to the mess tables broken down and secured to the bulkhead. Some of us young ones would find a straight leg chair or two and ride it across the mess deck with the roll of the ship. Amazing how much speed one could attain. Fortunately the ship would roll the opposite way in time to prevent one from crashing in to the bulkhead! I was never seasick, I almost felt compassion for the jarheads that were not so fortunate!! |
