Billy You have to play the same game in a tree stand or on the ground but out here in the Oak brush you don't have many trees I guess you could set up a Blind .I would just as soon find a trail.I have never been to KY. I guess it would be some what like Mo. I went hunting there a couple of years ago I guess it would be easier from a stand

Well we do have alot of trees here so using a stand is no problem there. An they do make to portable stands that you can set up like a small shed

Hunting this year, I was sitting in the bed of my truck as I have a permit to hunt from a stationary motor vehicle. While sitting there, I was rummaging through my pockets for a smoke and I look up and what do I see ?? Of course, Bambi standing right in front of me looking at me trying to figure out what I was, why I was there, etc. (yes, I smoke on stand). I slowly raised my shotgun, as that's what we're allowed to hunt with in that area, and drew a bead. Had I the sense to whistle, I could have nailed that deer right then and there. Most of the time, deer will stop to try and figure out what that was. I don't know why, but they do. Anyways, I passed on the shot because I didn't want to just wound it and have it run off.
About 20 mins later, I hear a rustling over on one side of my truck. Thinking Bambi was trying to sneak by me, I looked and sure enough, it was. I was in a better position to not really be seen by the deer. I raised my shotgun, aimed through my EOTech holoscope and fired. I watched the deer jump a bit and turn around and thought, crap, it's going back into the woods. I fired a second shot and it fell about 5 seconds later. Wanting to make I sure I didn't make a mistake by going right up to the deer, I lit a cigarette and sat there. Then, I crawled down from the back of my truck and drove over as near as I could. I grabbed my walking stick and hobbled on over to the deer. I had only hit it once and that was on my first shot. Once was enough. I wasted $2 on a round that didn't even hit the mark by squeezing off that second shot. (I was using Winchester Gold Sabots at $10/ box of five). I have seen and heard of people making a whistle or some other loud noise and it does work momentarily. Be ready to take your shot when you do. Amvet, it's a deer hunting thing. I was on stand in Ely when it was -15°F. You just have to dress for the weather. "We raise our glasses against the forces of evil" |

You guys want to talk about a state where deer get HUGE, let's discuss Missouri. I lived in St. Louis and met up and became friends with a guy that hunted up around Mark Twain lake. I believe that's what it was called anyway. We went hunting up there the second year I was living in MO, and while neither I nor Mike got a deer, we saw some guys who did. They were taking down bucks that field dressed at over 200 pounds. One that I know for sure of was a huge buck with a monster rack that field dressed at 230 pounds. The doe dress out at an average of about 150 - 180 pounds, and yearling bucks will average about 140 pounds. At least that's what I've been told. The bigger bucks tend to be in the northern end of the state, though. One guy told me the difference between the deer herd north of I-70 and those south of it is a very big difference. I don't know why there is such a difference, but from what I witnessed that one year, I don't doubt it.
Real courage is found, not in the willingness to risk death, but in the willingness to stand, alone if necessary, against the ignorant and disapproving herd. — Jon Roland, 1976 |

GW I went hunting in South Centeral MO.2 yrs.ago.I saw some Mule Deer that were pretty big not sure what they weighted.I lived there from 2001-2003.I think the Bigest I ever saw was up in Wash.State I only went hunting there one year while I was stationed at Whidbey Island The one I got was a 5 Point so it was pretty big by the way I was taught to count one side so according to some it was a 10 point.

SullyI see you are in NW NM, any where near Farminton or Aztec. I always wanted to hunt in NM. Out of state fees are high. I moved from CA to MO just to hunt. If anyone can tell me how I'll post a picture of the 10 pointer I got this year. GWis right about the deer in MO the southern White Tails are smaller they dont get all that good corn the northern deer get.

John I live right in between the two I live in Bloomfield but I was born in Colorado about 80 miles north of where I live.I feel pretty dumb I guess that was why I thought the one I shot near Popular Bluff MO. was a Mule Deer it was a Southern Whitetail it was lot darker than the Whitetail out West.John we have lots of small Whitetail right here I call them River Bucks I see one on road killed about once a week usually a young Doe they feed up in the fields at night and then try go back down to the River in the brush in the day.
