Someone once told me if you spook a deer, if you'll not lose your cool, you may still be able to make the deer stop dead in its tracks long enough to get a good shot at it. What he said to do was to make some weird sound or other, even a high pitched whistle is supposed to cause them to stop for long enough to get a shot. He said you should have the rifle to your shoulder with the cross hairs on the deer when it stops, because it won't stop for long.

Does anyone have any other tips, tricks or hunting strategy for different animals? Just something I thought would make a good topic.

What, no hunters on this forum? No one has any tips and tricks?

I am not a big hunter. I mean I like to go, but never do. I have only been a handful of times, and that was for Dove.

I don't get to go as much as I'd like to. I really REALLY love deer hunting. There's nothing that gets your heart pumping like seeing that flash of a tail and seeing that deer coming toward you. It doesn't matter to me if there are horns on it or not, I'm not out for the trophy. I'm out for the MEAT. I love Venison almost any way it can be cooked.

I've been rabbit hunting a couple of times and both times I was with someone that didn't know their butts from a hole in the ground. I've been Squirrel hunting once and again...I was with someone that didn't know his butt from a hole in the ground. One thing I've learned about Squirrel hunting, though, is if you want to trick the Squirrels into coming out of hiding...take a high powered rifle with you. They think you're deer hunting and they will hound the snot out of you. Big Grin

I've never looked at turning it to my advantage! I've gotten to the point where I was so sick of them that I shot one with a 1oz sabot out of a 12ga. That was messy.

There's been a few times when I spooked a deer. It would run off a hundred yards or so, then turn around to look and see what was behind it. It was a fatal mistake for bambi.

I saw on tv once where this guy tasted some deer shit to find out where it was going. What's up with that? Eeker Seems like that would just tell you where it's been and I ain't that curious.

Picture a 15 year old boy. Just got his "own" (bought by dad) 30-30. 170 grain soft points. First time allowed to hunt outside of his dads immediate control. Its november in Vermont. Its late. Sun is hitting the peaks of the mountains to the west. Its overcast. Kinda gloomy even. You know the kind of weather/light I mean.
He's walking back towards the farmhouse they are staying at, down a partially overgrown logging road.
You all know how grouse are, right? Wait till you're nearly on top of them and THUMP!THUMP! THUMP! off they go.
Now, how many of you have heard of "instinctive shooting"? With a rifle of course.
I dont think the poor grouse ever knew it died. "Poof!!" Just a cloud of feathers settling to the ground.
I do still have some feathers tho. A lucky charm. Had some in my hat the next day when I got my first white tail, not to mention I actually succeeded in hiding them from my Drill Instructors all through PI.

Yes a whistle or a hit on the grunt call will stop them in their tracks, but be ready or the trigger or the release cause he won't stay stopped very long. Never tried it on a spooked deer but have stopped them while they were just traveling like on a hot doe scent.

Don't ever believe anyone who says deer don't look up, thats bull crap. Was up around 18 feet or so and had a doe stop right at the base of the tree and look straight up at me once.

I just started hunting. No one to teach me. So the going is slow. Research on the web has helped a lot and though I haven't been successful, I'm hooked.

Right not my main focus is predator. In NH Coyote (open season all year), red and grey fox, and fisher are in season. I've managed to call a few coyote, but only got a shot off at one with the 12 ga. The slug hit low and he took off. I couldn't find a blood trail and lost him. That pissed me off. I knew I hit him because there was a bit of fur and little pinky nail sized pieces of meat at the spot I shot him.

Tried out my first treestand yesterday. Not fun when it's 2 degrees. It's a Summit Bullet Backpacker climbing stand. I'm hoping the stand changes my luck.

GW I grew up in Colorado got some pretty big Buckskin out this way my Dad bought me a 30-30 Winchester 94 for my 15 Birthday got a lot of Oak out here he told me & taught me to learn to slam that butt up to my shoulder he never told me about stopping him with a sound but he did tell me to try make a Deer lift his head by breaking a twig so you get a cleaner shot.I am not sure how you are going to make any of these other sounds you need two hands to make your shot I think I would feel pretty dumb walking around all day with a whistle in my mouth I guess if you are hunting from a tree stand it might work never was into stands.I still go Deer & Elk hunting ever year I have a 700 Hundred BDL Rem.Mag 7mm for Elk & Winchester 270 for Buckskin the reason I don't use a 30-30 Mod.94 anymore is because the new ones have a safety button under the lever it drives me nuts in the brush.
