Hello! I just had a couple questions about A-school (for the Navy) - if anyone has any input, that would be great.

1) What is A-school like? Are they as strict there as they are in boot camp, or do they give you a little bit more free time?

2) When do you typically find out what your first assignment will be? Is it after you graduate A-school?

Most Navy 'A' schools maintain the stance of good order and discipline routine. While they don't treat you like recruits, they will hold formations several times during the day, and they do march to and from classes. Once your classes are over, you are on liberty and the time is yours to do what you want..... within reason.

In the barracks, you will each be responsible for the upkeep of your quarters and will participate in weekly field days. Generally those are each Thursday, followed by a morning inspection on Friday morning. Those rooms that fail receive extra duty.

The expectation is that you will do whatever you have to to learn what is taught in the classes. You future orders are depending on how well you do in 'A' school. And yes, at the end of school is when you receive your next duty station orders.

Don't be too surprised if you find Marines attending the same classes.
