Hi everyone,
I just recently was accepted into the Army JAG Corps. Right now I'm a 3rd year law student, and I'll be getting commissioned after I take the bar exam in the summer. As a direct commissionee right out of law school with no prior military experience, I'm in a pretty good position to negotiate where I'll be assigned for my first 1-2 years (ironically, the ROTC and FLEP JAGs have much less say because they're already obligated to be in the Army for the next few years, whereas PP&TO feels they need to entice direct commissionees with more options). Last summer, I interned with JAG in D.C., and got a lot of advice from the attorneys there about which places I should put as my top preferences. Right now, I'm leaning towards Fort Carson and Fort Lewis, but I was wondering if folks here had some other suggestions? That is, was there a post you really enjoyed for some reason? Was it the surrounding area? The atmosphere/op tempo of the base? My main consideration is that I'll be getting married this August, and I don't want to drag my wife to some place where she'll be unhappy. She's been very supportive and would probably follow me anywhere, but I feel like I have something of a duty to make things as easy on her as possible. She's a molecular biology grad from Berkeley and has several years of experience working in the labs there, and finding a place where she could get a job that suits her would also be a big plus. (Note: some suggested to me that she would have a good chance at getting a job at a base hospital. Does anyone know the liklihood of these kinds of things?) Thanks for any help you can give! |

Where's "home" for you? Where's home for your wife? That will make a difference. Many times you'll be deployed and the wife will need some type of support group while you're gone. Having a ready made group of people (i.e. her family) close by is maybe where you want to do that first tour until she is used to being an Army Wife.
