Actually, do you recall any practical jokes you played or got played on you during your service?

Yeah, my Gunny caught me doing something I wasn't supposed to be doing while out on field exercise in 29 Stumps, and he decided I needed to dig him an 8X8X8 ft hole in the desert. While digging the hole I uncovered a dud 2000 lb bomb buried about three feet down. I had hit it two places with my pickaxe. I called my Gunny over and pointed at the shiny spots where the pickaxe gouged out some metal on the bomb casing. I them informed the Gunny that the damned thing was ticking!....I never knew that my Gunny could run that fast or that far in such a short period of time.


I had to stay with the bomb while the battery moved out of the area, and direct EOD to the location to blow it in place.

I have always been assigned to Bradley Fighting Vehicle platforms. For some reason, I can get Lieutenants to go POP and get on point with the rest of the world. So, we torture the young LT.

In Iraq, we got a brand spanking new Butterbar. Fresh from West Point, Dad was the 2-Star in charge of V Corps in Germany. We took many painstaking hours sewing one leg of his DCUs closed. This way, when the young LT tries to put his pants on in the vehicle, he comes to an abrupt stop, off balance, and falls down, usually incurring minor head trauma. When crewed aboard the vehicle, he stood out of the turret, and I sat in the gunner's seat, so I would tie his boots together. Also quite funny. Just funny to watch the "smart" college boy fall down.

Sending young troops off to fetch PRC-E7 batteries from our Motor Sergeant, always classic. Not that many people get the PRCprick)-77 prick E-7 joke much anymore...but still funny.

So the dud saved you from having to finish the 8 ft sq hole?

Bet they don't teach them how to deal with that at WP, the butterbar breaking in process and what to expect? Fill out the ID-10-T report maybe...
