I'm headed back to the sand box in December. I am looking to take a cell phone this time. Does anyone have any recommendations? I will be in Qatar, Iraq, & Afghanistan. Range Roamer seems to be the best best for the best price but was looking to someone that may have had some sort of experience on the matter.

Mr Weatherman. If I thought there were the ever so slightest possibility that I would detonate an IED with my cell phone, I would not be in this forum asking for advise. I am confined to the AFB while overseas and people are using cell phones on the bases and have been for years. I was simply asking if anyone had any comments on service providers, ect. It is very stressful to be going back overseas and any help I can get on the matter would be appreciated, however, Smart alleck comments are offisive. Thanks for your input

Wow, try not to be so thin skinned there Cabledawg. I think what Weatherman was humorously alluding to is that you are shopping around trying to find a cell phone that is cheap and works in Iraq....which doesn't seem to be a problem for IED makers....get it?

I don't see where he was offensive in any way.

I do appoligize if I misunderstood. Seemed to me it implied that I might be the one setting them off. If that were the case, it really rubbed me wrong...if not, then I was out of place. I have been doing alot of research on line ad e-mailing people in the service currently in Baghdad. Don't mean to be so stiff on the matter, but not being able to communicate with family is pretty serious to me and I'm just trying to get my ducks in a row before deployment. Thanks for the different light on the post.

CableDawg1

I humbly apologize for the wrong impression.

I feel guilty about the smart 'alleck' (nice phrase)-ness of my post. I ment no diss'en.

patoloco reads my signals well.

My heart is with you... and would cherish a possible call from you... particulary 'from those places' to your loved ones.

No need to appoligize. Communication is near and dear and You have liberty to sound off.

'Call me' on my Posts anytime! (so to speak)

"Unlike many other phones, the Mobal GSM World Phone works well in over 150 countries, and you never need to change the SIM card. I recently used the phone easily (very easily) when calling the USA from Italy, France, Spain, and Croatia. Hotels often charge high prices to use their phones, so I liked not to have to buy a calling card or even look for a pay phone. Having family members able to call you is also good for those of us with aged parents or children back home.

The Mobal international cell phone now sits in a desk drawer, costing me nothing, and waiting for its next opportunity to travel overseas. I'll just charge it up before my next trip, and we'll be off "

"Our best tip is The $49 Mobal World Phone. The best thing is that you can give your international cell phone number out to loved ones back home, so when you are traveling and they need to get hold of you they don’t have to worry about what hotel you are in, or what city you are in, or even what country you are in. They just call your Mobal World Phone."

Recommended by WashingtonPost.com
The good news is that thanks to technology, staying in touch with home while vacationing in foreign countries can be easy. If you want to have the phone before you go, you can buy a Mobal World Phone, which sells from $49 (other companies are renting phones for about $29 per week), and then charges by the minute. It can be cheaper than a prepaid SIM card because you are charged only for the minutes used. With prepaid SIM cards, unused minutes often aren't refunded!

Recommended in TIME
"Mobal's GSM World Phone costs just $49, and can be used in 150 foreign countries. Calls are charged per minute, there are no monthly fees or usage minimums."

Recommended in Frommer's
"The lowest price I have found for a GSM world phone is through Mobal. There are no monthly or annual fees and unlike prepaid SIM cards, call charges are per minute in $US and are debited from your credit card."

If you are looking for the cheapest way to get an international cell phone — so you can always travel abroad with the peace of mind you can be reached at a moment’s notice — then The Mobal GSM World Phone has been designed with you in mind.

How you benefit from buying instead of renting an international cell phone

International Cell Phone rental is geared to benefit the rental companies and not you! Just see how after two weeks renting, you could easily buy The Mobal GSM World Phone and keep it for life!

The Mobal GSM World Phone is incredibly convenient...

Getting ready to go abroad is a busy time, but The Mobal International Cell Phone is one thing you don't have to worry about.

If you rented an international cell phone every time you traveled you would have to deal with all the hassles of the rental procedure; the deposits, deliveries, returns and credit checks — the last things you need to think about!

Instead, The Mobal World Phone is very different. In between your trips, you can keep it in your drawer until you need it. When you do need it, you can just charge it up, switch it on, and you're ready to go.

Because there's no commitment to pay anything except for your calls, your new phone will not cost you a cent until you use it again on your next vacation.
Purchase comparison

This means that Mobal's International Cell Phone is the smart choice, even if you only travel once a year...

Because you only pay-per-call, and there are no other charges, The Mobal GSM World Phone is perfect if you travel every month and need to use it everyday, or just once a year and need it in case of an emergency.

A word about local SIM cards

You may have read that the cheapest way to use cell phones abroad is to buy local SIM cards so you can pay local call rates, but have you overlooked the actual cost to buy a cell phone and local SIM cards in the first place?

For a trip to Europe
The Mobal GSM World Phone works throughout Europe

The cost if you bought local SIM cards

* GSM cell phone without SIM card — $100
* Local UK SIM card — $39
* Local German SIM card — $60
* Local French SIM card — $59
* Local Italian SIM card — $49

$49

Total — $306

With Mobal you save $225 before you make a call!

As you can see, with local SIM cards you have to buy a new one for each country you travel to, the costs can add up fast. And that is if the country you are traveling to even provides a local SIM card service. The Mobal GSM World Phone gives you the best coverage in the world, with service in over 150 countries!

Other disadvantages of local SIM cards that you may have overlooked

* It expires after non-use
* You have to change your phone number in each country
* There's no itemized billing

* There's a risk of running out of talktime
* Frustrating to buy talk time in foreign country
* Foreign language customer support
