I'm a little surprised no one else has responded to this as as I'm not the bashful type here goes:
I must assume that you are already a seasoned TACP candidate? I only ask as this is not a field were recent boot camp graduates are selected from. Max physical training with and without a combat load. Combat load to include 20 to 30 lbs for radio gear, weapon. Weapon is usually a 9mm pistol. Most will also opt for a M16A4 along with the 9mm. Afraid of heights? Might be an issue when you are jumping out of aircraft for a tactical insertion. Map reading skills. Translate from observation of terrain to a grid map and transmit results. Remember the main goal fo this elite team is to direct bombing missions to fast movers. You may be called into co-ordinating air and artillery attacks, and possibly even ship to shore fire at same time. Also you will be in very close proximity to large volume of high explosives. Not everything aimed or dropped hits the desired point, some can even fall into your own position. While you may be Air Force, better get used to doing things the Army way. Especially the Airborne and Ranger way. Likely the only Air Force you'll be in regular contact is your immediate team members that are embedded with those Army types, and the voices of pilots responding to your calls for fire or air support. Heaven help you if you have to deal with Marines. We are kinda a little tougher than the Army on zoomies. Study and become an expert on all branches of our military and those of our allies aircraft and each ones flight charactoristics. These various aircraft do not all have same performace and flight charactoristics and allowances must be factored in when dealing with them or controlling them from the ground. Study up on emergency medicine. You'll never know when the life you save will be your own or your team mates. (remember the aimed or dropped reference) TACP is part of a well oiled machine whose entire reason for existence is to kill and kill with extreme violence. While you may not be the one that flipped the switch or puilled on the lanyard, you are the one that picked the target and you will be the one looking at the target with really good quality optics. You will see things that a large majority of the population will never see or understand, much less comprehend. Oh yeah, those images will be forever burned into your mind. Just thought I'd broach that last bit that isn't talked about too much. SEMPER FI The Gunny PROUD TO BE AN INFIDEL America is not at war. The Marines are at war, America is at the mall. |
