I am currently an E-6 in the Navy going on my 11th year of active duty service. I still have 3 years left of a 6 year contract. I want to break my contract to except a civilian job. My rate is not undermanned and I am not serving in a critical billet. Any one heard of someone that went through the same thing and what the outcome was?

On a serious note, I assume you have explored the options through the chain of command? in all branches of the military there is usually a touch point for information on options. not all ' dismissals' are hardship cases and many result from administrative proceedures.

NOT 3 years...though I'm no expert on the subject, I would doubt they'd let you out that early. I do, however, know of people that were let out with less than one year left in your similar circumstances. There's the college waiver (I think is 90 days?)- where you've been accepted to college and the semester starts on xx date. And there's the professional waiver (not sure of the time on this, I think I remember one of my friends pushing it to 9 months). They were able to state (in a very well worded letter) that they would be doing more to serve their country (specifically - fighting the war on global terrorism) in civilian employment than with current military duties. The waiver was granted anywhere from 90 days to 9 months? (not really sure here). The "big" waivers (over 90 days) were granted right after 11 Sep 2001, so don't know if that will still fly. Guys who got the waivers went on to critical positions with USCG, DHS, TSA, and US (Air) Marshalls (among others).

If your command is unwilling to negotiate through the "commanders option" style of discharge. Just stop doing your job to the extent allowed by UCMJ without being prosecuted, that way it makes it your commanders problem when stuff doesnt get done. They will eventually get tired of it and let you go. Its kinda a way of pumping the shit back up hill. When your at the bottem of the hill you have to have a shit pumper

Make sure to always be very appoligetic yet grossly incompetent. If you get cocky and start a confrontation then the back pressure will exceed the MAWP of your shit pump.

Yes, be a bone head like Round Ronald or you could try the ethical and moral approach.

You have to do what works, and if your command is unwilling to work with you, you dont have to many options.

I believe you could pull it off right now. The Navy has been cutting people loose recently. I was thinking about going back in a few months ago, the recruiter told me it was going to be tough for him to get me back in with the Navy being overmanned in most rates. So, with that being said, you've done 11 years, I don't see why they wouldn't let you go early if thats what you really want to do. Also, don't listen to rppearso's erred advice. Go through the proper channels and do it the right way, because you never know if you'll change your mind later down the road and want to get back in. Don't burn any bridges.

My advice is for when the "proper" channels fail.

rppearso, 11 years in service versus your couple of weeks? He's an E-6. Doubtful any E-6 in his/her right mind would shoot their career in the foot at Staff grades.

The Army has a program to which this applies specifically. Unfortunately, the MILPER message number escapes me. If one obtains employment from a civilian job that pays more than twice your pay grade salary, the Army will in essence allow you to "buy out" of your contract. I only know of a handful of people that have had this work; but it might be something to research.
