I am currently in DEP in the Air Force. I having trouble finding information on housing. I want to be stationed in Anchorage, AK, but that is beside the point. I have a girlfriend/fiancee that i want to live with me. How would that work?? I asked my retired navy father about it and he said on base housing can take up to a two year wait list depending on need.

My other question is... I am qualified for any Enlisted job other than applied geophysics, and was going to go in as an ATC but had some trouble with a recent injury. Basically the only problem was processing time. Any suggestions on alternate careers that transfer really well to the civilian world just in case i can't get the ATC job again? I also put load master. Any information is appreciated.

The Military has a saying:

'Hurry up and wait'.

You might be getting the Caisson before the Mule.

I never knew of any Base Housing that let you have a 'full time night woman' that was not your spouse.

I'd figure you'd have to have her a place 'Off Base'...

That cargo work is more of a strain than ATC...see the link for AFSC X1A271 job
in Alaska...

That part about 'Irregular Schedule & TDYs'
might cause a problem for your gal.

So...you're looking at doing at least a 'First Hitch' of 3 to 6 years before becoming a 'Load Master' as it is usually at the E-6 or E-7 level.

You should go ahead a marry her before enlisting if you are planning on taking her along... as it's a lot less trouble and effort...
(at least as far a Military paperwork is concerned)
but count on having to leave her behind for TDYs and forward area deployments.

Otherwise you can hope for some great home leave visits.

Fast track for good AF/civi jobs will be in
Health Care and Information Technology.

Or you could not join and just move to anchorage, and maybe get married and have a normal non dramatic life (unless your girlfriend is a drama queen). Just a thought, the economy is super good in Alaska right now you dont need to be in the military to do well here, Anchorage has an international air port and 2 of the largest small private owned air craft air ports in the nation that have full blown control towers. Just keep your options open because the military is not that great of a deal if you want nookie with your wife every night.
