A challenge is one thing, busy work and hazing is another. Learning to fly, build a house, etc are challenges. Basic is tolerating nonsence, the only real qualifications to passing basic is PT and rifle marksmanship, all the rest is getting yelled at because you droped your rifle or your battle buddy sneezed, thats a bunch or BS.

It may sound like BS at the time, but eventually it developes the individual soldier to learn how to perform as a team member, to think for themselves and others, to look out for others as well as the mission statement. After the training is over and you become a regular unit member, the B/S stops to some degree, and what you trained for and wanted becomes a reality.
If all you wanted form the military is to fly helicopters and look cool with out any of the other work, you never reseached the armed forces very deeply.

How many corrupt politicians had to finagle secret deals to have them made in their state ? How many kickbacks went to the military high command to amke sure those overpriced substandard pieces of military hardware got into your grubby little trainee hands?
