My friends say I'm crazy for wanting to do this but here we go...
When i get out of high school and finish my AIT...I want to go over seas for a tour of duty in Iraq. I am going into the National Guard more likely than not. My question is, would I be able to request to go over seas and pick a unit or will they send me whenever it is convinient? Thanks guys.

hmmm, ever think your friends MIGHT be right for a change?

Ask yourself this question: the United States military operates the best all terrain vehicles in the world, yet why do they insist on driving only on roads over in Iraq? Read the news on IED's and thier impact on US troops. Where are these IED's all planted?

Aegis,

wikipedia has some intel on the Fighting 36th.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_36th_Infantry_Division

The 36th is not expected to complete its reorgination until 2012...so you have time to
make rank and fill a good slot.

If you want to be deployed try the
Combat Aviation Brigade.

Here's a link to their homepage:

http://www.agd.state.tx.us/36id/36iddev/

The 36th has troops everywhere
so be careful what you wish for...you'll
probably get your wish...

Why not go to a community college or state college first? Then if you don't like it, then join the military.

Sounds like you have already joined the military but if you are delayed enlistment you can still get out. If you finish AIT then everything else is moot, they own you (unless you fight them) they will probably eventually nonvoulenteer deploy you.

I havent heard anything back so im not to worried about it, my term of service ends end of 2010 anyways so I will check back summer of 2010 and see how the process is comming along. Im getting my PE licence in 09 so im not going to concern myself with it in 09 of course I will probably be starting a PhD after that but I may eventually need a security clearance to work at los alamos or where ever and with the depletion of capable people to do anything highly technical in this nation the DOE would probably pressure the DOD to "straighten it out" since I was never officially AWOL because I was given premission to leave. I have witnessed alot of red tap go away when this nation is desperate for people who know how to do something. They are not going to let a PE PhD physisict get bogged down in the security clearance process unless theres a good reason.

Anyway to the OP if your not in dont join, wait until the military gets there crap together and go from there.

This also another ridiculous thought that our colleges and universities in the United States ACTUALLY provide an education. Its college! Never understimate the power of stupid people in large groups. If rppearso is indicative of the level of competence and education of our engineers, its no wonder bridges collapse and kill people.

I'd venture to say the military has its "crap together." Hell, we've been doing it for near 257 plus years, and quite successfully in the grand scheme of things. Aufklarer hit it on the head...a nice hot cup of it.

Wow and the hype continues. Let me guess military "engineers" do it right because they had 14 weeks (or what ever it is) of AIT so they are the true engineers. That is some dilusional thinking there, some people live in la la land and that is where they are comfortable.

rppearso and his lala land aside, i would have to suggest that if you have an opportunity to go to college that you take it. Take the time, put in the effort, get stronger, get smarter and then go into the guard. In the end it could help to make you a more effective and levelheaded soldier. As well as giving you time to prepare yourself for what the military is going to be like.Thats the route i'm taking and its going great so far.
However college isn't for everyone so it's really up to you assess what it is you want and how it will affect your life both now and in the future. Ask yourself wether your going to make the military a career or wether you are planning to get out after a certain ammount of time. Wether you are planning to start a family while in the military and if so how you plan to provide for them. These question may seem a bit pre-mature but its important to think of the future when you are making such a big decision.
