No, no discrimination, DI's hate everyone equally. Served with plenty of "foreigners" or immigrated Marines from all over the world during my 22 yrs. They do just fine.

What medical examinations will I go through when I enlist? I have this finger that kinda stands in an unordinary angle(just a little tough) because of a sports injury. Can minor things like this cause some shit in enlisting? Excuse me for asking stupid questions like this but I really dont want to make a trip to the USA for nothing.thankyou

Dobos...you'll do fine unless THAT finger's signaling the 'Hawaiian-good luck sign'.
The worst (or best) of the medical exams may infact involve a 'digit's unordinary angle' as you turn your head and cough...and it may be a stretch for you during the 'short arm' inspections... maybe better 'stick to the pans' and drum us up a cake (you Hungarian piquant piquer) Hafa Adai! |

Does knowing some languages other than english give me a better chance to be taken in to the USMC? Sorry I can't express myself better about this. Or should I keep quiet about that if I don't want to be a clerk? Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings with this. Was the first month in the marines what you thought it would be or not? I'm just courious. And do you have any suggestions what I should aim for after boot camp.(like tank driver, sniper, para). Maybe this waa a stupid question. Answer as you like please. thanks

d....the only stupid question is one that is not asked. How else will you get an answer?
They give you a series of tests beofre and during boot camp to determine what you qualify for. This applies generally for those that came in on open contract. They place you where they need you. Those that are on the ball, sign a contract that provides for specific type of job upon graduation from boot camp. This means you know what school you will report to after boot camp. Don't mistake some of our smart ass answers as us being indifferent. If you are successful in your endeavor to join the Marines, you will rapidly find out that we have a certain brand of humor in just about everything. (its just one way to deal with being a jughead) You asked about languages. Main thing with this is you really need to be able to communicate effectively with English language. Any other languages you are fluent with, adds to your capabilities to the USMC. Wait till your first liberty call in a foreign port where you don't speak the language...the language you'll learn rapidly is called 'peso-nality' (toss money at them until you get what you want!) thegunny:"This applies generally for those that came in on open contract." What does open contract mean? Is it something like breaking up the contract whenever I want to? And what is the realationship between the Marines and the Navy?
thankyou all |

d....an open contract is the contract one signs with no guaranteed school or specific job at the end of boot camp. It allows the Marine Corps to place you where it feels you will perform the best and for the Corps needs.
As for the relationship between the US Navy and Marines.....Officially the Marine Corps is a part of the Navy. As for the unoffical version.....well its something that has to be experienced. Mere words do not do it justice. Sailors are a unique and different breed of men and women. ok.....Sailors aka Squids, are a Marines favorite pasttime. Baiting Squids, fighting with Squids is almost a rite of passage with Marines. Its always been that way. I think it started back at Tun Tavern. I believe that was the first recorded fight between Marines and Sailors. You guyz showed up one nite at the bar to shanghi us to do your dirty work, and its been the same ever since then!
On the other side of this, if a Marine had a choice of service member to have fighting by his side, most Marines would select a Squid over a doggie or a zoomie. Its a weird sort of hate and admiration at the same time, type relationship the Navy and Marines have towards one another. (note that I didn't say love-hate relationship!) One of the prime reasons, and this goes way back in history, that the Marines are generally always 'the first to fight', is that Squids made that possible, by getting us there first. Pretty close gunny only diffrence in my case I always went to a Bar where Jarheads were known to hang out because they could always find the prettest women Jarheads & Saliors liked to drink together but could not get drunk together because then those good looking women came back into play and a Jarhead is sore losers. As far as respect could always count on a Jarhead when the going got tough .Heck I guess we got along pretty good I am a country boy never did mind a good fight.

Why do you respect army soldiers less than the sailors? Or doesn't doggie mean them?

He did not show a lack of respect towards the Army. The Marines use Navy corpsmen and these guys go into battle with them. The Navy also drives the landing craft which land the Marines (and do other stuff which puts them under fire with the Marines). They have fought together since their existence.
The Army, on the other hand, has only really fought side by side with the Marines since World War I (2nd U.S. Division) and due to their different style of operation, do not always agree on how to do the job (what works for one may not work for the other). Listen to The Gunny, he knows what he is talking about and is okay for a Marine. "It is fatal to enter any war without the will to win it" DOUGLAS MacARTHUR, 1952 |

You have to understand on a US Naval installation in combat the USMC is also our security the US Navy does not have but limited combat training except on that ship our function is to get onshore Marine equipment used to fight a War or Operation all of the Operations on Beach landings are cordinated by USN & USMC jointly. The job of the Gator Navy is transporting Marines & Equipment from point A to B and back.During that time they are on Liberty together when you have a ships compliment of maybe 250 Navy personal and maybe 1600 Combat Marines and Equipment x four or five becuse an Anfib operation consist of usually four or five ships in the same City together pretty hard to ignore one another. And God forbid even though my Father is gone he was a Dogface in world War 1 he was one of the first American Soldiers to ever wear the 1st ID patch.I worked with the US Army SPF and on Gunboats in Vietnam and I got along with them fine.

Before I join the Marines should I start training myself mentally? If yes, do you have any suggestions for that? If someone fails to do something in boot camp, does he or she get kicked out immediatly or will he get a second chance? Thank You All |

Its not that I have less respect for Soldiers, and as Harry said, they do have their own certain style and way of doing the job, that differs from our methods.
One of my biggest concerns with Army doctrine is they actually train how to retreat. Calling a Soldier 'doggie' is just the same as them calling us 'jarheads'. Nothing more, nothing less. We don't take any offense to the jarhead term. d....when applying for a green card, asking to join the US Military curries no favor in obtaining the green card. They hear all kinds of promises.
