i dont know if this is where i should be posting this but whatever...im a junior in high school thinking about the marine reserves while i attend college, i just have a few questions. is it possible for me to be doing sports while in the reserves at college or would that create a conflict? and what are the chances of being deployed before finishing school, am i most likely not gonna get to finish before being deployed or will i probably be able to finish? thanks

As far as the sports, there's no issue/conflict there....how would you see a conflict? Being involved in sports would keep you in shape, no issues there.
As to the deployments-- It depends. Typically, if you're enrolled in college full time, the Corps tries to look out for you and NOT deploy you. I knew a guy who did over 22 years in the USMCR without a single deployment or activation (of course, the active duty guys had no respect for him, but that's another story). BUT, there is ALWAYS the chance you can be activated and deployed at any time (and now more than ever with Iraq and Afghanistan). There are a lot of factors-- your MOS/job skill being the most significant. If your job is needed by the active duty Marines, then you'll be activated and deployed. Reserve infantry units are be recalled all the time. Some other MOS's that are typically short also get activated on a regular basis (recon and intel assets are some that I know of, but I'm sure there are others). |
