What does "MCT" mean to you? That commonly refers to Marine Combat Training-- which is infantry training which takes place after Boot Camp. So, you're confusing me by saying you went through MCT (while being in the DEP) and that it has anything to do with being an aircraft mechanic.
There is a Marine aircraft mechanic here, I'll let him speak to the job (my dad was one as well though, he loved it). As far as advice for Boot Camp-- everyone is different, everyone encounters a different challenge. Keep your mouth shut and your ears open is the best (generic) advice I can give you. While you're in the DEP- PT (Physical Training). I don't know what kind of shape you're in, but being in good physical condition will make life easier. I was in great shape and breezed (physically) through Boot. My son.....my son played WoW....a lot. The first time he ran anything near a mile was in the DEP. He was pretty much hurting (physically) through Boot, but he made it. Start running. Get up to 3-5 miles. Start working out. |

Spent 16 years as Rolls Royce jet mech for the AV8 series jets. Everything from complete engine repair, to test cell runs at the Intermediate Maintenance Activity level, and at the squadron level (Organization) level. At the squadron you remove, install, service, tune, low and high power the the engines. You also wear multiple hats at the squadron when you aren't working on the engines, you get to be certified as plane captain and perform preflights, fully service the aircraft, strap pilots in and launch them out on missions. (your the guy out there saluting the pilot as he taxis out to take off)
Or you could be assigned to maintenance control or in quality assurance as an inspector. Generally those jobs are only assigned after a certain degree of experience is earned. I'm not gonna tell you its fun cuz it ain't. Its hard work and very dangerous. You'll bust yer knuckles, burn skin off yer hands, spill fuel, hydralic fliuds, and even naplam all over you. Changing tires and brakes on a jet is just part of a typical day at the squadron. Jets are big suck and blow machines and they don't care what they suck in. Flight lines are either very hot places to work, or they are very cold. Go aboard ship and the danger multiplies tenfold. One does derive a great deal of satisfaction from the job though. Most everyone I ever worked with enjoyed being and integral part of a squadron. SEMPER FI The Gunny PROUD TO BE AN INFIDEL America is not at war. The Marines are at war, America is at the mall. |
