Every year these guy's come out to Yuma for a few months to brush up on these drills. They put on quite a show. The Marine Coprs Band is out here at the same time, so its not unusual to be working to Sousa Marches all day long, as the practice field is adjacent to my offices. On a side note, when the Marine band plays the Marine Corps Hymn, all of the Marines active and retired are supposed to snap to attention. (its a Marine thing) My boss, being a lifetime civilian couldn't understand why most of his staff would stand up at attention in the offices whenever that song would play. and yeah, we explained it to him eventually, but the look on his face was worth keeping him in the dark for a while.

Gunny:
I've seen these youngsters in action on my side of the border on more than one occasion as they come up every year or so to perform at Fort Henry with the Guard there at Twilight Tatoos in the summer.. very impressive in a Rockettes/Lord of the dance kind of flashy thing...damn sure they have velcro gloves and strips on the guns so they don't drop them [ never seen it happen any time I saw the show ] Bet they could hypnotize the Taliban into giving up if they deployed to Afghanistan!! as for standing up for ' the tune ' ..yeah..know that well.. always like watching the civvies scratching their heads and shuffling their feet when the Regimental March is played and serving/retired snap to attention and fall silent even in the middle of a conversation... enjoyed a discussion on military tradition with a US Army Major attached to the US Consulate at the last Garrison Officers' Ball..He had a great time witnessing the March Pasts for each Regiment and what the traditions for each were, made for an excellent drinking discussion... There I was , at the head of the old 68th... |
