I have a friend who is enlisting in the USMC, but he does not want to be Infantry or do Infantry patrol.

Regardless of what his MOS is (Administrative), will he HAVE to do Infantry patrol even though he is a Non-Infantry U.S. Marine?

Since he wont go to Infantry school, but instead, Marine Combat Training (MCT) and having a non-infantry MOS, will he have to do it regardless since he will become a Marine?!

PLEASE GIVE SOME INFO!

P.S. - I think that they wont since he wont be completely trained for the front line... but you never know since he will be a Marine.

I remember what I was told in 69, you may be a clerk but your a war fighter first, comes down to the needs of the branch you join IMHO, yell for the 2 gunny's that live here.

All Marines will go to MCT and will receive some refresher training from time to time in infantry/combat operations.

He probably will not have to do any "infantry patrols" after that. I say probably, because sh!t happens. You never know when the whole unit is overrun and the admin guys and cooks have to fight as well. Almost never happens nowadays. Almost.

So, short answer is no. He won't be EXPECTED to do those things.

Ditto for what patoloco stated. I would add though for you to inform your friend, that each and every Marine is and always will be considered a MARINE RIFLEMAN, FIRST AND FOREMOST.

Good morning all....

I'm sorry...I mean no disrespect here but why would someone want to join the USMC and say they don't want to do any of the infantry....it's the Marine Corps!
At risk of over simplifying that is like saying I want to work for Bekins Movers but I don't want to do any heavy lifting.
In my opinion someone who is interested in joining the Marines should expect to be a combat riflemen by default and except that fact and do it well.
If one gets assigned a different MOS than 0311 then that is fine.
But...like I say....no disrespect but this request just makes no sense to me.
The man should pick a different branch if that is his concern.
His request just rubs me wrong for some reason.

Am I missing something here?

A great day to all.

Liptight, my colleagues above have said it. In general the USA will fight wars in the future from well protected bases or perimeters, where everyone is secure (unless we are again confronted cold war style with an opposing Army). This means that your friend will be integrated in this base or perimeter and not be on patrols. The fighting will be done by specialist combat arms guys (Infantry, Armor, Artillery, Aviation, Rocket people etc.) who will operate from those localities and return to them. BUUUT, in the past it has happened that these secure bases and perimeters were overrun by clever enemies. There were some very embarassing moments in US military history when this has happened because the occupants of those bases just threw up their hands or were killed outright. Therefore, it is an unwritten military law, that ALL soldiers/marines/airmen/sailors must be able to defend themselves in a rudimentary way and keep that training up to date.

If you look up MOH recipients, you will see that they were not all Infantry or even combat arms. Be prepared.
