Now I just have to get back east to visit it....
Amateur Historian Washington Post June 1, 2006 Pg. B1 Marine Corps History Getting A Higher Profile The $140 million National Museum of the Marine Corps, a massive pyramid-like structure rising near Quantico along Interstate 95, is scheduled to open Nov. 10, a date already chiseled into its cornerstone. On any given day, some 115 workers are dangling, rappelling and crawling all over the structure and the 135-acre site, completing the initial $80 million phase. In addition to galleries devoted to Marine history, exhibits will include a winter battlefield in Korea, a landing zone in Vietnam and "immersion experiences" in which visitors can hear officers bark orders and fire a laser M-16 rifle. Besides promoting the Marine Corps and its mission, supporters hope the museum will help lure visitors beyond the Capital Beltway and into eastern Prince William County. -- Stephanie McCrummen |
