Speak to the recruiter about this. Get it in writing on your contract. During boot everyone is an E-1. There are certain positions within the platoon that recruits are presented with such as Squad Leader, Platoon Guide, Secretary that if one is able to stay in that position throughout boot camp, they generally receive a meritorious promotion. I have seen Meritorious E-3 right out of Boot but that is usually reserved for a recruit that score Series range high shooter, and Series Guide, running a perfect PFT with a score of 300. I received Meritorious promotion to E-2 out of Boot.

To be truthfull, there really isn't much difference being E-2 over E-1 with exception of a little more inthe paycheck. Probably $35.00 per month. If you really want to serve and can express this via proper motivation and dedication, getting E-2 out of boot shouldn't be that difficult. In the Marines, rank has to be earned, just like earning the title of Marine.

As TheGunny said, there are plenty of ways to make E2 while going through boot camp. And even if you don't, it's automatic in 6 months. Boot Camp is 3 months, that means 3 more months and you're an E2.
Ah, now quick war story-- I remember I was late in picking up E2 (I actually pinned it on in 7 months), but at 6 months a First Sergeant asked why I "wasn't a PFC yet?", I replied "Private don't know." "I'll look into that for you." THREE YEARS LATER I got a letter in the mail updating my promotion one month and a check for....yeah I think it was around $35. The difference in that one month of pay. |

I believe you can get promoted to either E-1 or E-2 if you recruit a friend.

Every time someone votes Obama on election day, the Bill of Rigts will be in an ounce of more jeopardy. |
