The last of an "old breed" of Marine Officers. His son, Charles Krulak became Commandant of the Marine Corps (CMC). I was in Okinawa at that time. And we were recognizing the 50th Anniversary of the Liberation of Okinawa in 1995. It was quite a big deal at the time. And there were all these old vets all over the place for the different remembrances, parades and celebrations. One of the events was to have breakfast with General Krulak (Charles Krulak, the CMC at the time). Well, evidently one of these old vets sitting at my table got the word wrong. When the General walked in and everyone stood at attention, the room became instantly silent, and a lone voice chimes out-- "Well, that ain't ****ing General Krulak!" Apparently, he was expecting his dad, Victor Krulak-- who was "his" general during the battle of Okinawa. This guy then went on to tell tale after tale of how dedicated he was to THE General Krulak (not this youngster) and why this man was the greatest general on earth. And he was a 70+ year old PFC. You don't see enlisted men talking about "their" generals (or officers) like that today....well, very few. Victor Krulak must have been one hell of a man to exist in his Marines' memories as an icon of Marine leadership some 50 years later. As I said, the last of an old breed. RIP General.

Count it the greatest sin to prefer life to honor, and for the sake of living to lose what makes it worth living.
