I recently graduated from MCRD Parris Island (21 Sept) and headed to MCT then MOS school. I was wondering after MOS school, barring a deployment, what is active duty like. Is it fun? Do you get time to go to the gym or go out on the town? Also, whats it like to live in the barracks? It seems like it would be fun, but i have no clue. So if you can help me out, thanks

You're pretty much your own man now...well after MOS school. There's still some restrictions placed on you in MOS school, depending on what school you go to. But after that, yes, gym, out in town, whatever you want to do past working hours (normally 0730-1630, it'll depend on the job you have, but that' s "normal"). Barracks...kinda sucks actually. I did not enjoy living in the barracks. Let's just say, you're living in close quarters with several others (in my case, only men, I was in the infantry my first tour) and sometimes you won't all get along. Didn't like it. Luckily, I didn't have to live there long, as I got married and moved out. Some people like it, others don't.

As far as "is it fun"? Eh, depends on where you go. Had my worst tour in North Carolina, I hated it there. Had my best in Okinawa, Japan. I guess it's what you make it as well, though I couldn't make shit in NC.

Congrats on earning the title of MARINE!

I'm sure you'll find something to occupy your off duty time. Marines have a way of locating all the good spots for liberty. Just hook up with your buddies and enjoy yourself. Each base has its own unique qualities. Most of the towns or cities where a Marine base is located caters to the young Marines these days. I would recommend you see or look for the out of bounds listing posted by the installation commander and do your level best to stay out of them. Booze may make you feel bulletproof, but trust me, you ain't.
