I enlisted about 4 months ago and i still have 2 months until i leave for bootcamp. My MOS as of right now is AF aviation mechanic, and there is no sign on bonus. Im not worried about the sign on bonus but im just worried that i am going to be bored with that job. I Have been thinking about changing my MOS to Infantry. I don't know if changing it is such a good idea though. I qualified to do any job on my asvab.
im not sure on what to do about the situation. a little help? |

Welcome to the site pconner, as to your question I would tell you to yell for either patoloco or thegunny they are the resident marines. They can lead you in the right direction.

Dude....what do you want to do? These two jobs you're talking about are on the extremes. One is a technical job requiring some smarts and a lot of training...and infantry, sad to say, is not.
I was infantry for five years. After those first five years I couldn't do it anymore. Couldn't see myself doing 20 years of that (it was hard on the body). It wasn't for me. A lot of people love it. Wouldn't do anything else. I had a good friend of mine do it for 23 years. Guy loved the infantry and retired from the drill field (as a Drill Instructor). I moved to intel after the infantry and loved it. So, it all depends on your personality and what YOU like to do. My dad did four years as an aviation mechanic. Loved it. Got out and went straight to one of the airlines and continued to be an aviation mechanic for the next 35 years as a civilian before he retired. THE Gunny is also around here. Also was an aviation mechanic. I'm sure he'll weigh in as well. What do YOU want to do? To say one job is better than the other is very subjective. |

Either way you go, you won't be bored. Go with Infantry, you'll be sending rounds downrange at the bad guy's. Mind you, they do shoot back. Plenty of opportunity to test yourself both mentally and phsyically. I enjoyed my time with Infantry commands as a Field Radio Operator. My job was to provide for Artillery support on call. Nothing boring there. Go Marine aviation, and you'll be involved with high tempo flight operations from a variety of locations from boats, air strips in country, and bases back home. Even while in Marine Aviation, you'll still be expected to remain qualified on both the service rifle, pistol. (once you make SNCO) Perhaps they will throw in some time on crew served weapons. My squadrons ensured we stayed current on all of our crew served weapons. Weigh your options well. In Marine Aviation, the new Joint Strike Fighter is going to be arriving soon. It will tbe the replacement for the AV8B, FA-18. We are currently ramping up V-22 Osprey squadrons now. All this new cutting edge technology will require technicians to keep them in the air. Ain't nothing boring there. Let us know how everything goes for you. Yes, even after boot camp and through your enlistment. SEMPER FI The Gunny PROUD TO BE AN INFIDEL America is not at war. The Marines are at war, America is at the mall. |

pconnor,
Congrats on entering the Corps. I was an MP station at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in 82-84, and between El Toro and Pendleton, I saw a bit of both worlds. Gunny and Patoloco are giving you the straight scoop. It all depends on what you want. If I were you, I'd stay with the AV MOS for now -- get that knowledge into your brain housing group, get into your MOS and if you don't ike it you can transfer to 0311. Either way, you are a Marine and that is something to honor and be proud of. Good luck & Semper Fi |
