Hello, I'am a 19 years old European guy.
I heard about the possibility to earn the American Nationnality by joining the USMC.
USMC need guys and I'd like to be American (and a soldier).
Does someone get more information about required conditions and the way to join marines in this case?

Yes, in many cases you can. I suggest that you contact the American embassy in your country. There are tests that you must take, including one to test your basic English proficiency. I served with several people from different countries who were gaining their citizenship this way.

Is the English test difficult? Is it a written or an oral test? Both?

Generally, one is already in the USA for a time prior to actually attempting to join. I haven't heard of many (any) cases where recruits were accepted externally from the country. Generally it's recruits whose parents live and are employed here already. But as in anything, there are and have been exceptions.

Tow Gunners suggestion is sound advice. Visit the US Embassy and see what they say. I wouldn't hold out too much hope though.

I called the US Embassy and they (the woman who answered) told me it was impossible to join the US Forces if you aren't American. I think she's wrong cause you and me already heard of some cases (this question must be to specifical).
I gonna try to visit'em soon.

In most cases you must be a United States citizen or resident alien to join the Marines. Upon establishing permanent legal residence in the U.S., you should address specific questions regarding your enlistment to your local Marine Corps recruiter.

I stand corrected. But when I was on the Peleliu in 1988 I was on the ship's soccer team, and there were a number of people on the team from other countries. I specifically remember a guy from Columbia and another one from a Caribean island who were gaining their citizenship by serving in the military. And I don't think either had lived in the States.

By the way, doesn't the Navy accept about 500-1,000 Filipinos each year per a treaty?

I have contacted the USMC, they training is limited to Us citizen and alien resident, but they told me to visit the Embassy too.

I probably have to get he green card (or visa) to join, I hope it's not very hard to get it for this proffession.

Navy is entirelly different ball game. That was only done under agreement held over from WWII. The Filipino's were at that time considered allies and the residency rule was exempted. We have no such exemptions in place for any Euro country, even the UK.

I searched information too. I read somewhere that foreigners can join the american army but can not become officers. They are often welcome in Special ops unit because they can speak at least 2 languages. I also read that after 3 years in the army you get the equivalent of a green card.

Where are you from? I'm 20 year old and from Belgium. I'm also intersted joining the american army. But I want to join the rangers.

We discourage foreign nationals from joining for a specific reason....security.

Foreign nationals cannot attend briefings where the subject is classified in nature. You can see why they don't just let anyone join up?

Very interesting thread.. as A Canadian I know a number ofboys who have served in th3e US forces.. there are,at least, 15 right now in the USMC in Iraq..though, it must be said they are First Nations/Natives [ i.e. Indians ] from the Reserves and as such are special cases since they are a 'soverign nation ' under Canadian Constitution..

have an associate of the Good Padre's who is a Canadian but served as a chaplain in the US army [ Rabbi }..

Canadians going down to the US for service has been a long standing ' tradition ' and during both WWi and WWII Americans came up to join the fight before America entered the conflict. Met a few at a regimental reuinion when the WWII vets were honoured at a dinner...'course when the US joined tghe fight against Hitler, the American lads had to return to their home country and re-up in US uniforms...

I was, too, under the impression that you had to have some kind of ' residency ' requirement..but, exceptions are made all the time when the need to fill boots is urgent..

As far as I know the USA doesn't have a " Foreign Legion " al a France and Spain, but maybe they should look into it LOL..

Big difference between you Canucks and these Euro boyz that wanna join the US marines and US Army. (we at least know where you live) and can get there really easily....

Why do I want to join the us army? and why not the belgian or the french army? Because I do NOT agree with the values of my countries. I went to america and I know you don't know much about europe, but don't worry europeans dont know either. I know our countries seems inocents peacefull nations, just because we give "free" healthcare because we "give" money to poor people (I know this is more the left wings point of vieuw, but anyway...). But this is a politician trick. We are going straight ahead to the society of G. Orwell.

In europe, we don't defend any cause any values in relationship with our cultures. We want to defend other cultures before ours.
Even racism has an other signification here : "It is white people hating others, only the white people can not hate".
Anyway,as I always say, if don't want to be racist love everyone without any exeptions (even nazis, commies, islamists,...) or hate everyone (even yourself).

I just want to tell you, I'll never fight for France or Belgium.
America is not the perfect coutry for me, but people defend their own values and culture there. And they act when they have to.

While I can appreciate what your saying about how your own countries direction has you looking elsewhere, consider this: change needs to come from within.

Your countries are the way they are, because the citizens allow it to occur and continue.

HI! I would like to join the Marines right after I graduated from high school. But there are two problems.One of them is that I'm hungarian (europe) and the other is that i have a little red-green colorblindness. Do thease disqualify me from joining? I mean even if I'm accepted as a foreigner does colorblindness combined with being a foreigner cause some problems in enlisting. thanks

I think the rule is you must have a resident alien card ("green card") before enlisting. Color blindness will not stop an enlistment, but will narrow down the types of jobs you may qualify for.

Do you think foreigners have to make a better effort during training to be accepted and granted the marine title. And do DI's treat foreigner recruits worse than americans? Do they discriminate them? Or have you heard of any story that would prove it? I'm just curious.
