First, my apologies for posting here, secondly I would be happy to continue this conversation elsewhere, I have a posting in the "Considering the Military" section under Marine Intel. My question pertains to 0231/0211 Marine Intel; more so what can be expected from the occupation in regards to good and bad billets, the better billets for Career advancement, etc...
I am a prior service Navy PO2 and the Navy BC was a joke, as I have not yet left for Boot Camp, I am also seeking any advice on this subject as well; I am most interested in a direction to go to find the academic information given in BC.
Thank you for you help.

Can't become an 0211 unless you're a Cpl or above. 0211 is a very tough MOS to get into. There are several criteria you must meet (see MCO 3850) and you must be selected after meeting that criteria. 0231 is an entry level MOS and you can get that guaranteed from the recruiter. As far as "career advancing" billets, most of the new 0231's are going overseas-- no choice- Japan, Iraq, Afghanistan. Of course, combat zones are going to be more career enhancing. If you're not going overseas, the only other career enhancing billet would be to get yourself on a MEU. The only "bad move" I've heard about with 0231 (and for sure 0211) is "never get stuck with the wing" (assigned to a Marine Airwing unit). People are definitely not happy with those assignments.

Thank you for the information, all of it was helpful. Is 0231 a/the recommended route to 0211 in regards to similar skill sets? I have been told that 0231's are the "Paper Pushers" who give presentations to officers (I think this maybe an overgeneralization), which I have no problem with if it gives me an inside step and better understanding to the community. I was under the (mis)perception that 0231 can be assigned in an array of billets from the office type to working with/in combat units. Is this a needs of the Marines type situation or is there a pipeline within the 0231 that enables you go one way/ both ways.
Again thank you for your help.
Also if there is direction you recommend I go to find info on BC.

There is no pipeline really to 0211, except for the fact that 99% of the time you're on your second tour (you'll have to reenlist to LATMove). 0211's come from all walks of life (for a reason, the varied backgrounds are an advantage). However, being an 0231 may give you a heads-up in successful completion of training (as the jobs share some intel skills). And yes, 0231 can be a variety of assignments- pushin' papers, official map folder, etc. Depends on skills (most top of the class guys get the good assignments) and a little bit of luck. Boot Camp? See the recruiter, he's probably got the best line on info there.
