A growing number of Soldiers and Marines are protecting themselves with innovative body armor designed by a US Army Veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

TACARM, located near Fort Bragg, NC, offers products that were invented to reduce the number of Americans being wounded in combat by high explosive weapons such as Improvised Explosive Devices(IED), rocket-propelled grenades and fragments produced by mortar and artillery rounds.

The strap-on Ballistic Elbow and Knee Guards provide protection from high velocity fragments and projectiles that current issue tactical elbow and knee pads do not. Submitted to the Soldier Enhancement Program and currently being tested by the US Army at Fort Benning, Ga., a contract could be awarded in the beginning of fiscal year 2010.

The Ballistic Combat Uniform is worn with a ballistic vest such as the Interceptor Body Armor and enable Soldiers and Marines to quickly add or remove ballistic inserts based on such factors as the mission, likelihood of enemy contact and weather conditions. Areas protected include the: upper arms, elbows, lower back, hips, upper legs, knee, shins and calves.

Both patent pending inventions will also prove valuable to police and law enforcement personnel who perform high risk operations such as those conducted by Hostage Rescue Teams.
