Got notification of the deatrh of a MOH winner from WWII - 94 year old Jose Lopez...

he set a standard thats for sure..

Born in Mexico, he entered the US illegally, joined the US military , fought ain Europe and at the Bettle of the Bulge proved his worth...
as a Sgt in the 2nd Infantry Division was caught facing a superior force of German infantry and armour advance...

He jumped into a shallow hole and using a heavy machine gun killed 10 of the enemy, taking tank fire, he held his position, took out 25 more soldiers trying to get around his flank.. ran to another position and ' continued to disuade the enemy's advance ' [ love that ].. laying down covering fire to allow his comrqdes to retire. killed another 70 through continuous fire, reloading and after being hit by blast concussions...

Was given a field promotion from Pte to Sgt [ the least they could do ] and then awarded the medal when the full story came out ..

When asked 50 years later about the incident he said it had not been a matter of bravery " I believe any man would do the same thing " and that he prayed to the Virgin of Guadalupe to get him through [ guess it worked ]..

Made it to 94.. hope his life after the war brought him much satisfaction and happiness..
