I am looking for information about the difference in small unit tactics (if there is any) in distinct combat units like for example: between Rangers and Special Forces. Are the tactics outlined in FM 7-8 just the basic for units of similar size and more advanced ones are classified?
What difference is there between the ones SOF use and the ones Light Infantry units use? I read that the 18B MOS are taught small unit tactics of foreign militaries, how much do they differ from U.S. tactics and what does this particular course's final test involve? Do SOF have field manuals as well or are they just taught the stuff. Thanks |

Actually the manual for small unit tactics is the standard that just about all units go by. Specialized units build on those tactics, based on experiences learned. Most of those lessons learned will eventually get into the books, but its usually long after the fact.

our small unit tactics for the infantry up here in Canada are a mixture of both Bristish and American, but we are starting to use more and more American. We send guys down to the Ranger course and they bring back alot of good info that we use. Since our deployment to Kandahar in the new yr we had guys from the 173 come up here and teach us alot and showned us how we need to change some things. so to answer your question, maybe, yes at least we have some similar tactics.
