Back in 1964, in an effort to make the M16 rifle a more effective weapon, Colt engineer Rob Roy designed a belt-fed version of it. This wasn't a totally new design, but was essentially a scaled-down version of a system originally designed in 1957 for an AR10 rifle, by Armalite's Gene Stoner and John Peck. In the Stoner/Peck design, the belt-feed mechanism was mounted through the magazine well and the belt was fed upside-down through a cutout in the receiver, actuated by a feed-cam machined in the bolt carrier.

nice piece of work. wonder why it wasn't produced in quantity? They probably only made about 20 or so of them.

Hmmmm, you got a woodie from that pic huh? Was it the end of the M203 blooper tube that did it for you? The old saying of 'happiness is a belt fed weapon' has a totally new meaning now!

Funny though, I never would have assigned that attribute to automatic weapons till now.

I honestly could of gone all year without that picture in my mind.........

That is one heavy weapon, considering the heat shield around the barrel, plus the 203, plus the magazine.

Good point,TG
Carrying a basic load of 40mm,belts of 5.56,and all other humping gear could wear you out quick!Maybe that was a consideration in not fielding the weapon?

A GPMG with a scope and M203?
A rifle with one helluva magazine?

i like it, though it would be heavy.

That's a nasty looking weapon system. Personally, I think I would rather ditch the 40mm, and pop a forward assault grip in it's place.

I've read a little into this weapon, and I like the fact that it is interchangeable between belt-fed/magazine fed just like the M-249.
