I remember my Drill Sergeants in basic complaining about the M-16..overheard them..saying something like 'you can tell it's swell if it's mattel' or something like that. Personally, I never had any problems with them, but that's just me.

In the book Black Hawk Down I remember the Strike Force complaining about how the Somalies would keep coming at them after being shot clean through a couple times w/ the 5.56. One of the reasons for that is also b/c they were high on khat(sp?). I own a couple of assault rifles, and I gotta admit the 7.62 gives me great pleasure when watching my targets disappear. But I've never been in combat so it prob isnt my place to say which is better in those situations. But if I were in combat and based off of what I've read, and heard I would go w/ a M14 in non urban, and an M4A1 w/ collapsible stock, short barrel etc etc when in urban combat. 45 as side in both environments.

In 1982, the Royal Marine Commando Artic Warfare Cadre complained that the M16' s that they were issued with, and the 5.56 rounds, would not drop their targets. They soon learnt to retrieve 7.62 Nato, FN Fals from dead, or captured Argys, and turned the captured 50cals to devastatingly and effective good use.

The government just bought an English-Italian chopper for Marine1 because they said it was better than the American made Sikorsky.
So with that logic why didn't they just buy the AK or FAL's? |

It always makes me wonder, that if the sh*t was to really hit the fan, how reliable would spare parts be to keep you in action?
I think thats a bloody good point, that purchasers and politicians should reconsider. Train Hard, Fight Easy. |

i agree with mike. maybe too much attention to versatility has resulted in a quick judgement. the xm8 to me appears like a bad decision and that maybe the army's on a newage/digital kick, hence the space age looking BDUs, weapons, and whatnot.

A long overdue recap I guess. The XM8 got cancelled after all.

I'm hoping they stick with the AR style of weapon, versus trying to field something new to the troops.
I'm wondering if it's possible for them to slightly change the rifling in the M-16 series weapons to increase knock-down power a little. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Vietnam era M-16 rifles have excellent knock-down power with the 5.56 round? I understand that they changed the rifling slightly to increase range/accuracy, and the trade-off was a little loss of power. Once again, please correct me if I'm way off-course with this. M16 has always (well, since the 1980's when I first carried one) had an issue with knock-down power. Haven't been in that many gunfights to really say myself that it's true, but in Somalia we put 30 rounds in a guy before he went down, and he was high on khat. Our guys in Iraq are pretty much saying the same things.

Why couldn't we just stick with M1 garands cause after WWII the Italians came up with a copy of one but it one addition........ a 20 round mag!!!!!!!!!! What was nice about this is it was lighter than a BAR and more accurate.
